UK Diesel Prices Hit £2 Per Litre for First Time
The average price of diesel in the United Kingdom has reached £2 per litre for the first time, marking a new record as fuel costs continue to rise amid disruptions to global energy supplies.
According to figures highlighted by Coin Bureau in a post on X, the average diesel price reached 200.01 pence per litre. The previous record was 199.09 pence, set in June 2022.
The latest increase represents a sharp move from levels recorded at the start of the U.S.-Iran conflict. Diesel was priced at 142.38 pence per litre at that point, meaning the average price has risen by 57.6 pence since then. Independent reporting and RAC data also confirm that the UK average reached 200.01 pence per litre on Oct. 2.
Diesel Breaks Previous Record
The move above the £2 threshold puts current UK diesel prices above the previous record established during the energy-price shock that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Reuters reported that the RAC's nationwide average reached 200.01 pence per litre on Oct. 2, while noting that the previous high of 199.09 pence was recorded in June 2022.
The RAC separately said that diesel had reached an average of £2 per litre at UK forecourts, describing the latest level as another record high.
The increase is being recorded against a backdrop of disruptions affecting global fuel supplies. Recent reports have linked the rise to tensions involving Iran and broader disruptions to crude and refined-product markets.
Prices Rise 57.6 Pence Since Conflict Began
Coin Bureau's figures show that diesel has climbed from 142.38 pence per litre to 200.01 pence, an increase of 57.6 pence.
The increase has occurred over a period in which concerns over fuel supply have intensified. The RAC said the cost of filling a 55-litre diesel tank had reached £110.01, up £31.70 compared with Feb. 28.
The rise is significant for motorists as well as businesses that rely heavily on diesel, including haulage, delivery and fleet operators. The RAC has warned that higher fuel costs are putting additional pressure on these users.
Record Fuel Costs Add to Economic Pressure
The £2-per-litre milestone comes as European markets face broader concerns over energy supply and fuel availability. Reuters reported that European Union countries were discussing measures involving diesel stocks as governments sought to respond to surging fuel prices.
For UK consumers, the latest figure establishes a new benchmark for diesel prices after the previous record from June 2022 was surpassed. The average price now stands at 200.01 pence per litre, according to the RAC data cited by Coin Bureau and reported by multiple outlets.
