US and China agree to cut tariffs on $30 billion of goods each and establish regular AI talks and a hotline for AI incidents.

The United States and China have agreed to pursue reciprocal tariff reductions covering about $30 billion worth of goods in each direction while launching a new dialogue on artificial intelligence, according to Cointelegraph.

The agreement follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Washington and includes plans to establish a communication channel for AI-related incidents. The two countries also agreed to continue discussions on trade through a bilateral Board of Trade.

Tariff Reductions Cover $30 Billion in Goods

The tariff arrangement applies to non-sensitive goods traded between the two economies. A White House statement said the countries had reached consensus on recommendations for more favorable tariff treatment covering $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction.

The products identified include agricultural goods, wood and cosmetics among U.S. exports, while U.S. imports covered by the discussions include small appliances, toys and decorations. The arrangement is part of broader efforts to manage trade tensions between the world's two largest economies.

The two sides also agreed to establish a trade council and continue work stemming from earlier negotiations in Kuala Lumpur. The tariff discussions follow an extension of an existing trade truce, providing additional time for negotiations on broader economic issues.

US and China Establish AI Communication Channel

Artificial intelligence was another central element of the agreement. Washington and Beijing agreed to maintain a dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI, with another round of discussions scheduled for November.

The countries also agreed to establish a communication mechanism for AI-related incidents. Earlier discussions between U.S. and Chinese officials had focused on the need for direct communication over AI safety incidents and risks that could have national-security implications.

The arrangement does not amount to a broader agreement on AI technology or development. The United States has continued to emphasize maintaining its technological position, while discussions have focused on communication, risks and potential areas of coordination.

Further Talks Scheduled for November

The new AI dialogue provides a formal channel for the two countries to continue discussing the technology as its capabilities develop. The November meeting is the next specifically identified stage in the discussions.

On trade, the two countries will continue working on the reciprocal tariff reductions covering approximately $30 billion of goods in each direction, alongside the newly established trade council.
