Trump Rules Out Scott Bessent for ‘Super Intelligence’ Czar Role

Trump Says Bessent Will Stay at Treasury
Trump said Bessent would not become the administration’s “Super Intelligence (SI) Czar,” citing both Bessent’s preference and his current position at the Treasury Department.
“Scott Bessent will not be going to be Super Intelligence (SI) Czar,” Trump wrote, adding that Bessent “doesn’t want to” take the position and that he is doing well at Treasury. Trump said he wants to keep Bessent in his current role.
The statement followed reports that Bessent had emerged as a potential candidate for the administration’s planned artificial intelligence leadership role. Semafor reported on Sept. 22 that three people familiar with the matter identified Bessent as a leading contender.
Trump Has Planned New AI Leadership Role
Trump announced plans last week to establish an “AI Force” and appoint an AI czar, although the administration had not publicly provided detailed information about how the position or force would operate.
The proposed position comes as the administration places increasing emphasis on artificial intelligence and competition with China. Bessent has already been involved in AI-related discussions with Chinese officials.
During talks in New York on Sept. 20, Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng discussed a potential notification mechanism for artificial intelligence incidents that could pose national security risks. The discussions were part of broader efforts to establish a formal U.S.-China dialogue on AI.
Trump has also adopted the term “super intelligence” when referring to artificial intelligence. During his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 22, he said the United States would use the term “super intelligence” in government documents.
Search for AI Czar Continues
Trump’s decision to keep Bessent at Treasury leaves the administration’s search for an AI czar unresolved. Other officials have been identified in media reports as potential candidates, including White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.
For Bessent, the immediate outcome is a continuation of his Treasury role, while the administration has yet to publicly identify who will lead the planned AI initiative.
