Tether Signs Kazakhstan Central Bank Agreement to Explore Tenge-Backed Stablecoin
Tether has officially signed an agreement with Kazakhstan’s central bank to explore the potential development of a stablecoin backed by the Kazakh tenge, according to Coin Bureau. The agreement opens a framework for the two sides to examine how stablecoin technology could be applied to local use cases and what infrastructure would be required for a potential pilot.
Stablecoin Pilot Under Review
Under the agreement, Tether and the National Bank of Kazakhstan will study existing stablecoin models used globally as they assess the potential role of a tenge-backed digital asset. The work will include an examination of local use cases and the infrastructure needed to support a possible pilot project.
The agreement does not announce the launch of a tenge-backed stablecoin. Instead, it establishes a framework for Tether and Kazakhstan’s central bank to explore the concept, evaluate relevant models and consider the technical infrastructure that would be necessary for a pilot.
Tokenization and DeFi Included
The scope of the agreement extends beyond stablecoins. Tether and the National Bank will also examine Real World Asset tokenization, a process involving the representation of real-world assets in digital form, as well as decentralized finance, commonly known as DeFi.
The inclusion of Real World Asset tokenization and DeFi places the proposed stablecoin study within a broader examination of digital-asset infrastructure. However, the agreement described by Coin Bureau does not provide details on which specific real-world assets could be tokenized, what a potential DeFi implementation would involve, or when a pilot could begin.
For Tether, the agreement represents an exploration of how its stablecoin-related technology and broader digital-asset infrastructure could be applied within Kazakhstan. For the National Bank, the study will focus on global stablecoin models, domestic use cases and the infrastructure required for a potential pilot.
Coin Bureau reported the agreement as an official step toward exploring a tenge-backed stablecoin, while the specific design, implementation and timing of any potential pilot remain subject to further study by Tether and Kazakhstan’s National Bank.
