Switzerland Approves First Spot Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors

Switzerland approves BBIT, its first spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors, with trading expected to begin on SIX Swiss Exchange in November.

Switzerland approves the BBIT Bitcoin Fund ETF, giving retail investors access to a regulated fund that holds Bitcoin directly.

Switzerland’s financial regulator has approved the country’s first exchange-traded fund (ETF) that invests exclusively in Bitcoin and allows retail investors to gain direct exposure to the cryptocurrency. BIT Asset Management said its Bitcoin Fund ETF, trading under the ticker BBIT, is expected to begin trading on SIX Swiss Exchange in November.

The approval by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) marks a new development in Switzerland’s regulated cryptocurrency investment market. Unlike many Bitcoin products listed across Europe, the fund is structured as a Swiss collective investment scheme rather than a debt-based exchange-traded product.

How Switzerland’s Bitcoin ETF Differs From European ETPs

BIT Asset Management said many cryptocurrency investment products currently listed in Europe are exchange-traded products, or ETPs, structured as debt instruments that expose investors to issuer risk.

BBIT follows a different legal structure. According to the asset manager, the fund’s assets are held separately from those of the management company and are “ring-fenced” for investors. The fund holds Bitcoin directly rather than providing exposure through a broader basket of cryptocurrencies.

The ETF has been approved for public offering in Switzerland only. It falls under the country’s category of “other funds for alternative investments” with particular risk, reflecting the specific risk classification applied to this type of investment vehicle.

FINMA Cites Bitcoin’s Trading History and Volume

FINMA has permitted investment funds focused primarily on baskets of cryptocurrencies since 2021. However, the regulator said this approval is the first for a fund that invests solely in Bitcoin.

The decision reflects Bitcoin’s longer trading history and higher trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies, according to the regulator. FINMA also noted that other fund providers have submitted applications for Bitcoin ETFs, indicating that additional proposals are under consideration.

Regulator Warns About Bitcoin Volatility

Despite approving the fund, FINMA emphasized that Bitcoin remains highly volatile. Access through a regulated ETF does not eliminate the underlying cryptocurrency’s price risk.

The expected November launch will give eligible retail investors in Switzerland a new regulated structure for direct Bitcoin exposure. However, the fund’s approval does not remove the risks associated with changes in Bitcoin’s market price.
