Reddit Shares Plunge 29.2% as Google AI Search Threatens Website Traffic
Reddit shares suffered their worst single-day decline on record after the company warned that Google's artificial intelligence-powered search features are reducing the amount of traffic directed to its platform. The stock closed down 29.2% on Friday, wiping more than $7 billion from Reddit's market value in a single day and extending its losing streak to eight consecutive sessions.
The decline has left Reddit shares down 41% over eight straight trading sessions, highlighting growing concerns about how artificial intelligence could reshape the internet's traffic economy and affect businesses that depend on search engines to attract visitors.
Google AI Mode Raises Concerns Over Reddit Traffic
The issue emerged during Reddit's earnings call, when CEO Steve Huffman discussed the impact of Google's AI-powered search experience on the platform's ability to attract users.
According to Coin Bureau comments attributed to Huffman, Google's bots continue crawling and reading Reddit pages at roughly the same level as before. However, the relationship between content discovery and website traffic appears to be changing as Google introduces AI Mode.
Rather than directing users to Reddit to find discussions and answers, Google's AI feature can respond to questions directly within its search experience. This changes how users interact with online information, potentially reducing the need to visit the original websites where that information was published.
Huffman said that AI Mode does not generate traffic for Reddit. He also indicated that, to his knowledge, the feature does not send traffic to other websites either.
AI Search Challenges the Traditional Internet Traffic Model
Reddit's share-price decline illustrates a broader concern for digital platforms and publishers that rely on search engines as a major source of visitors. For years, Google's search ecosystem has helped websites attract audiences by presenting links to relevant pages, discussions and articles.
AI-powered search introduces a different experience. Instead of requiring users to open multiple websites to gather information, AI systems can summarize and deliver answers directly within the search interface.
For platforms such as Reddit, which host large volumes of user-generated discussions and answers, this creates a potential gap between content consumption and website visits. Search engines may continue accessing and processing website content without necessarily delivering the same number of visitors to the original platforms.
Huffman's comments point to this distinction: Google's automated systems are still reading Reddit's content, but that activity is not translating into corresponding referral traffic through AI Mode.
Investors Reassess the Impact of Artificial Intelligence
The market reaction was severe. Reddit's 29.2% decline on Friday marked its worst trading day ever, while the stock's cumulative 41% loss across eight consecutive sessions added to the pressure on the company's valuation.
The loss of more than $7 billion in markets value in a single day underscores how seriously investors are considering the potential consequences of changes in online search behavior.
Although the reported figures do not establish that Google's AI Mode is solely responsible for Reddit's share-price performance, the concerns raised during the earnings call have placed the relationship between artificial intelligence, search visibility and website traffic firmly in focus.
The central issue raised by Huffman is that AI-powered search can continue using information published by websites while providing users with answers without sending them to those sources. For Reddit and other internet platforms, that distinction could become increasingly important as AI-driven search experiences expand.
