Former Ripple Adviser Says XRPL Is Bank-Ready but Warns XRP Price Gains Are Not Guaranteed
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has the technical capabilities to support large-scale banking operations, cross-border payments and tokenized assets, but wider institutional adoption will not necessarily translate into higher XRP prices, according to Anthony Welfare, a former Ripple adviser on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
Speaking on the AllinCrypto Podcast, Welfare said XRPL can process transactions quickly and at low cost, making it suitable for financial institutions, payment providers and governments. However, he emphasized that technology alone is not enough to secure adoption or guarantee that the XRP token will benefit financially from increased network activity.
XRPL Offers Fast Payments and Tokenization Capabilities
Welfare said there is no fundamental reason XRPL cannot scale to accommodate the requirements of banks and large payment systems. The network supports cross-border transfers, digital asset transactions and tokenization, with transactions that can be completed in seconds.
He also highlighted the ability to transfer money between wallets and trade assets in less than three seconds. These capabilities could support financial applications that require relatively fast settlement and lower transaction costs.
Welfare pointed to Ripple USD (RLUSD), a dollar-backed stablecoin, as an example of how the network can support digital payments. Looking ahead, blockchain networks could also facilitate the transfer of digital representations of currencies, stocks and other assets.
He added that businesses are gradually moving beyond blockchain experiments toward pilot programs and practical deployments. However, much of this institutional activity remains private, making its overall scale difficult to assess from publicly available information in the source material.
Liquidity and Interoperability Remain Key Obstacles
Despite XRPL's technical capabilities, Welfare said institutional adoption depends on several factors beyond transaction speed and cost. Banks and other financial organizations need adequate liquidity, reliable asset backing, custody services and compliance systems before they can integrate blockchain networks into their operations.
Interoperability presents another challenge. Financial institutions and businesses may already use Ethereum, Arbitrum, private blockchains or other networks. As a result, adopting XRPL is not simply a matter of choosing a fast ledger; organizations must also determine how different systems can communicate and transfer assets efficiently.
These requirements mean that successful institutional adoption depends on the broader financial infrastructure surrounding a blockchain, including the movement of funds, asset security and the ability to connect different networks.
Greater XRPL Adoption Does Not Guarantee an XRP Rally
Welfare drew a distinction between the growth of the XRPL ecosystem and the market performance of XRP. Banks and companies can use the ledger to transfer money and move digital assets, but greater network usage does not automatically mean the XRP token will appreciate by the same measure.
The relationship between network activity and XRP demand depends on how the token is used in payment flows. Factors involving available funds, asset backing, secure custody and the way transactions are settled can also influence how value moves through the system.
Consequently, an increase in XRPL transaction volumes alone does not establish that demand for XRP will rise or that its market price will follow.
At the time described in the source report, XRP was trading near $1.31 amid a broader cryptocurrency market correction. The price reference provides market context but does not establish how the token will respond to future institutional adoption.
Welfare's assessment highlights the distinction between blockchain infrastructure adoption and token valuation. While XRPL may offer capabilities suited to institutional payments and tokenization, the economic impact on XRP depends on actual usage and the role the token plays within those activities.
