Coinbase CEO Says Stablecoins and AI Could Replace Traditional News Subscriptions

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says stablecoins and AI agents could enable article-by-article payments through the x402 protocol instead of subscription

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong discusses using stablecoin micropayments and AI agents to pay for individual online news articles.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes stablecoin payments and artificial intelligence could reshape how people pay for online news, replacing some recurring subscriptions with automated payments for individual articles. In an October 29 post on X, Armstrong highlighted Coinbase's x402 protocol as a potential way for AI agents to purchase digital content and compensate publishers directly.

The proposed approach would allow readers to access specific articles without committing to monthly subscription plans. Instead, an authorized AI assistant could retrieve requested content and complete a small payment to the publisher on the reader's behalf.

How Coinbase's x402 Protocol Could Change News Payments

Armstrong argued that readers should be able to pay for individual pieces of journalism rather than subscribe to an entire publication simply to read one article. The model would shift digital publishing toward payments based on actual usage, potentially giving publishers another way to generate revenue.

“Stablecoins and x402 enable businesses to accept micropayments for usage and decrease friction at checkout,” Armstrong stated.

Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025 as an open protocol designed to facilitate payments between websites, applications and AI agents. Its name refers to HTTP 402, a status code associated with payment requirements.

Under a possible implementation, a publisher could require a payment of $0.25 before allowing access to an article. An authorized AI agent could transfer stablecoins to meet that requirement and retrieve the content without requiring the user to complete a separate manual checkout process.

The same mechanism could support charges for datasets, software interfaces and other digital resources, extending the concept beyond online journalism.

AWS and Cloudflare Expand x402 Payment Options

Coinbase has also worked to expand the infrastructure supporting x402. In June, the company partnered with Amazon Web Services to support publishers using AWS CloudFront and Web Application Firewall. The collaboration allows participating publishers to charge AI agents for access to online resources through the protocol.

Cloudflare introduced its Monetization Gateway in closed beta in September, providing another implementation for businesses exploring automated payments. Participating companies can request payment when AI agents access websites, datasets and application programming interfaces.

These developments could give publishers additional options for charging for content and other digital products according to usage rather than requiring customers to purchase recurring subscriptions. The approach could also apply to services that need to provide specific information or resources to automated systems.

Automated Micropayments Depend on Publisher and User Adoption

The potential shift outlined by Armstrong depends on publishers choosing to sell individual articles and consumers authorizing AI agents to make payments on their behalf. The protocol provides a mechanism for automated transactions, but its broader impact on subscription-based publishing will depend on how businesses and users adopt the model.

If implemented more widely, stablecoin micropayments could offer an alternative for readers who want occasional access to paid content without maintaining multiple subscriptions. For publishers, the model could create another way to monetize individual visits and automated access to digital resources.
