Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Says Stablecoins and x402 Could Challenge Online Subscriptions

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says stablecoins and x402 could enable AI agents to pay for individual articles, challenging traditional online subscript

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong discusses how stablecoins and the x402 protocol could enable automated payments for online articles and digital content.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes stablecoins and automated payment technology could change how consumers access online content, potentially reducing reliance on recurring subscriptions. His vision centers on x402, an open payment protocol designed to let websites charge AI agents and other applications for individual requests rather than requiring users to purchase monthly plans.

In a post on X, Armstrong argued that combining stablecoins with x402 could make small, usage-based payments easier for businesses and consumers by reducing friction during checkout.

“Stablecoins and x402 enable businesses to accept micropayments for usage and decrease friction at checkout,” Armstrong said.

How x402 Could Change Online News Subscriptions

Armstrong sees online journalism as one area where the technology could offer an alternative to traditional paywalls. Instead of paying for a monthly subscription to read a single article, a consumer could ask an AI agent to retrieve the content and authorize payment directly to the publisher.

For example, if a newspaper charges $0.25 for an article, an AI assistant could receive a payment request from the publisher and authorize a stablecoin transaction for that amount. The payment would depend on the user having granted the agent permission to spend funds.

This model could allow publishers to charge readers based on actual usage while giving consumers access to individual pieces of content without committing to a recurring subscription. Its broader adoption would depend on publishers implementing the system and users choosing to authorize automated payments.

What Is Coinbase's x402 Payment Protocol?

Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025 as an open payment protocol built around HTTP status code 402, which means “Payment Required.” Although the status code has existed since the early days of the internet, it was not widely adopted as a mechanism for processing payments.

The x402 protocol is designed to turn that status code into a way for websites, applications, and AI agents to coordinate payments automatically. A service can request payment for access to a resource, allowing a compatible agent or application to authorize a transaction instead of requiring a conventional subscription or manual checkout process.

Stablecoins are central to Armstrong's proposal because they can be used to make small digital payments. Under the envisioned system, an AI agent could handle a transaction for a specific article or another online resource, provided the relevant service supports x402 and the user has authorized the payment.

Coinbase, Amazon and Cloudflare Advance AI Payments

Interest in automated payments is also reflected in infrastructure projects involving major technology companies. In June, Coinbase partnered with Amazon Web Services to help publishers using AWS CloudFront and Web Application Firewall monetize requests made by AI agents through x402.

Cloudflare separately introduced its Monetization Gateway in closed beta in September. The service allows participating businesses to request payments from AI agents seeking access to websites, datasets, and application programming interfaces through the x402 protocol.

These initiatives point to efforts to develop payment infrastructure for AI-driven internet activity. If adopted more broadly, usage-based payments could provide publishers and other online businesses with an alternative way to charge for digital resources. However, Armstrong's prediction does not establish that traditional subscriptions will disappear, and the extent of any shift will depend on adoption by publishers, businesses, and consumers.
