Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson Develops New Programming Language With Advanced Cryptography
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has revealed that he is personally developing a new programming language for the blockchain, with a focus on advanced cryptography features that support intents and proof-carrying data (PCD) through Groth16 proofs.
Hoskinson announced the project in response to a community member asking about Cardano's distinctive advantages as a decentralized foundation for blockchain applications. He described the language as the first of its kind to enable intents and PCD using Groth16 proofs.
However, Hoskinson has not disclosed the language's name, technical specifications or expected release date. The announcement therefore provides only an initial indication of the project's intended capabilities, rather than a detailed development roadmap.
New Language Announcement Follows Midnight Teaser
The programming language announcement comes after Hoskinson hinted earlier in the week at a major concept involving Midnight, Cardano's partner blockchain focused on privacy.
"I'm working on a concept that only Midnight can bring to the cryptocurrency space to solve most of the problems. It's gonna be the magnum opus for my career," Hoskinson said.
It remains unclear whether the proposed programming language and the Midnight concept are connected. Hoskinson has not publicly confirmed a relationship between the two initiatives.
Hoskinson's Longstanding Interest in Programming Languages
Hoskinson has frequently discussed programming language design and its role in blockchain development. Cardano's development architecture originally used Haskell as a foundation, reflecting his interest in the functional programming language.
In June 2022, Hoskinson joined a discussion between Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey about the merits of different programming languages. After Musk expressed a preference for C over modern C++, Hoskinson suggested that they consider Haskell.
His views on the decision to use Haskell for Cardano have since become more nuanced. In May 2024, Hoskinson said he had nearly selected Clojure instead. He explained that Haskell ultimately won out partly because of Cloud Haskell, as well as access to other technologies, including Liquid Haskell and Agda.
In an April 2025 interview, Hoskinson said he would probably choose a different programming language if he had the opportunity to rebuild Cardano from scratch.
Cardano and Midnight Already Support Multiple Languages
Cardano currently supports several programming languages for smart contract development, including Plutus, which is based on Haskell, and Aiken. Midnight also has a privacy-focused programming language called Compact.
Hoskinson's latest project could add another language to this existing ecosystem, although its precise role remains unknown. Without further details about its design, compatibility or release schedule, it is not yet possible to determine how the language would fit alongside Cardano's current development tools.
