Vitalik Buterin Gives 60% Odds to Single-Digit Overhead for Advanced
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin estimates there is a 60% chance that three advanced cryptographic technologies — SNARKs, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and indistinguishability obfuscation (iO) — could eventually operate with single-digit computational overhead.
Buterin also assigned a 33% probability that all three technologies could approach near-zero additional overhead for large real-world workloads, according to information published by @WuBlockchain. His assessment highlights the possibility that cryptographic techniques currently associated with substantial computational costs could markets become significantly more practical as specialized hardware, algorithms and workloads improve.
Buterin Sees SNARKs as the Likeliest Near-Term Breakthrough
Of the three technologies, Buterin said at least one, most likely SNARKs, could reach sub-10x overhead by the end of this decade.

FHE and iO Face a More Ambitious Efficiency Target
Buterin's assessment also covers FHE and iO, two areas that have broader implications for privacy-preserving computation. FHE is designed to allow computation on encrypted data, while iO aims to make it possible to obscure the internal structure of a computation while preserving its functionality.
Reaching single-digit overhead across these Cryptocurrency technologies would represent a substantial efficiency improvement, although Buterin's estimates are probabilities rather than predictions of a guaranteed technological outcome.
For the blockchain industry, continued progress could influence the economics of privacy, verifiable computation and decentralized applications.
