Pi Network Protocol 27 Is Live: Now the Real Test Begins for Developers

Pi Network Protocol 27 is live, expanding smart-contract infrastructure and advancing DEX and AMM development as developers face the next test.

Pi Network has entered a new stage of its blockchain development with the rollout of Protocol 27, putting greater attention on the infrastructure needed for smart contracts and decentralized applications.

The development was highlighted by Pi community account @kizzyking020, which described Protocol 27 as an important upgrade for the Pi ecosystem and raised a broader question for Pioneers and developers: what will actually be built on top of the new infrastructure?

Pi's official Node page currently states that the Mainnet blockchain is under a protocol upgrade and that every Mainnet node must upgrade to version 27. The network had previously announced that Protocol 27 would introduce more flexible and secure smart contract authentication, allowing accounts and applications to use additional methods to authorize transactions.

Protocol 27 Moves Pi Beyond Infrastructure

The rollout represents another step in Pi Network's effort to expand the capabilities of its blockchain beyond basic transactions.

Before Protocol 27, Pi had already introduced several components intended to support smart-contract development. In April, the network released an RPC server on Testnet, giving developers a way to communicate with the blockchain, retrieve data and test state-changing transactions. Pi said the infrastructure was designed to support future smart-contract development and could eventually be deployed on Mainnet based on Testnet performance.

Pi also introduced its first smart-contract capability on Testnet in April through a subscription system. The feature was designed to allow recurring payments for services while keeping approved funds in a user's wallet until an actual billing event occurs. Pi said the contract was being reviewed through PiRC2 before any Mainnet rollout.

These developments provide important context for Protocol 27. The latest upgrade is not an isolated change, but part of a series of infrastructure upgrades intended to give developers more tools to build applications on Pi.

Smart Contracts Could Expand the Pi Ecosystem

Smart-contract functionality could potentially broaden the types of applications that can operate on the Pi blockchain.

Instead of limiting blockchain activity to simple transfers, smart contracts can provide the underlying logic for applications such as decentralized finance, marketplaces, payment systems and other Web3 services.

Pi has already been testing some of these concepts on its Testnet. In December 2025, the network announced updates to its DEX and automated market maker, or AMM, liquidity-pool features. The Testnet environment was designed to allow developers and Pioneers to experiment with decentralized exchange mechanics using Test-Pi.

The Testnet DEX was also designed around Pi-denominated trading pairs, while Pi introduced domain verification to give users additional information when evaluating tokens and tested liquidity-based token rankings.

Those features remain important because the existence of technical infrastructure alone does not automatically create a functioning market. Developers need to build applications, users need to interact with them, and liquidity needs to develop around those applications.

The DEX and AMM Question

Protocol 27 has attracted particular attention because of its connection to Pi's broader DEX and AMM development.

Independent reporting has linked the Protocol 27 rollout with smart-contract authentication, AMM infrastructure and decentralized exchange functionality. Pi's previous Testnet work provides evidence that DEX and AMM mechanics have already been under development and testing within the ecosystem.

The distinction between infrastructure and adoption will become increasingly important as the upgrade progresses.

A blockchain can provide smart-contract capabilities, liquidity pools and decentralized exchange infrastructure without immediately generating significant economic activity. The next stage therefore depends heavily on whether developers use those capabilities to create applications that Pioneers find useful.

For Pi Network, this could make developer activity one of the most important indicators to watch following Protocol 27.

Developers Face the Bigger Test

The rollout changes the question surrounding Pi from whether additional blockchain functionality can be introduced to what developers will do with it.

Pi has continued expanding its developer tools during 2026. In September, the network introduced additional developer capabilities, including local storage for selected Pi Browser applications, access to app-specific staking data and file and video sharing. Pi also released consolidated documentation intended to make it easier for developers to build and launch applications.

Pi Desktop has also expanded through SoloHost, which allows community applications and services to run through participating infrastructure. Recent updates added improved application discovery, management and developer tools.

Together, these initiatives create a broader development environment around the Pi blockchain. Protocol 27 adds another layer to that environment by improving smart-contract authentication and advancing the network's protocol capabilities.
