OpenAI Commits $1 Billion to Cyber Defense as New AI Targets Zero-Day Flaws

The commitment is not structured as a grant or dedicated funding program. Instead, it will provide discounted access to OpenAI’s Daybreak cybersecurity platform, along with training and technical support for eligible organizations.

Daybreak, introduced by OpenAI earlier this year, is available in two tiers. Blue uses the company’s standard models for routine defensive cybersecurity work, while Red provides approved organizations with specialized models designed for more sensitive security tasks. OpenAI said roughly 2,000 organizations are already using the platform.

OpenAI Prioritizes Critical Infrastructure

OpenAI’s cybersecurity initiative is aimed primarily at organizations responsible for systems considered important to public infrastructure and the broader economy.

The company’s priority list includes water and wastewater operators, electricity grid companies, state and local governments, community and regional banks, nonprofits and open-source maintainers.

Crypto exchanges, custodians and blockchain protocols were not specifically identified in the announcement.

That omission is significant for the cryptocurrency sector because much of the infrastructure underpinning digital assets is open source. Bitcoin Core, Ethereum clients and software libraries used by decentralized finance protocols are maintained by relatively small teams, including unpaid contributors, despite the fact that the underlying code can protect billions of dollars in assets.

New AI Capabilities Raise Cybersecurity Stakes

The initiative follows OpenAI’s disclosure on Monday about Astra, its newest model.

OpenAI said Astra can identify software vulnerabilities that were not previously known and convert those weaknesses into functional attacks without requiring a human to guide each stage of the process.

The capability represents a significant development in the cybersecurity arms race because discovering and exploiting previously undocumented vulnerabilities has traditionally required highly skilled security researchers or attackers.

The announcement has also increased pressure on organizations maintaining critical open-source infrastructure to gain access to advanced AI systems for defensive purposes.

Organizations seeking subsidized access to Daybreak can apply through the platform’s website. OpenAI said it plans to make the model available to partner countries in the coming weeks.

Crypto Infrastructure Faces Growing AI-Driven Risks

The timing of OpenAI’s pledge comes after several cybersecurity incidents affecting cryptocurrency and blockchain infrastructure.

In August, a vulnerability in BTCPay Server, an open-source platform used by merchants to accept bitcoin payments, exposed credentials associated with Lightning nodes. Attackers subsequently drained funds before a patch was released.

Core Lightning, another major software implementation used to operate nodes on the Bitcoin Lightning Network, also warned operators last week to disconnect their machines following a series of AI-generated vulnerability reports. Several of those reports identified genuine security flaws.

The incidents illustrate the increasingly complicated role AI can play in software security. The same technology that can help developers locate vulnerabilities more quickly can also potentially enable attackers to discover and exploit weaknesses at greater speed.

A separate incident involving Coldcard, a hardware wallet designed for offline bitcoin storage, further highlighted the potential defensive role of advanced AI. The company released new firmware after a $114 million theft and said frontier AI models had helped identify bugs unrelated to the original incident.

Crypto Companies Call for Greater AI Access

The growing number of security incidents ultimately contributed to an open letter signed by more than three dozen companies, including Coinbase, Block, BitGo, Blockstream and ARK Invest.

The companies called on AI laboratories to provide the cryptocurrency industry with early access to their most capable models for cybersecurity work.

Their argument was that AI developers were carefully determining which organizations could access their strongest security models, while malicious actors were likely to obtain and use those capabilities regardless.

That imbalance, the companies argued, could leave the developers and maintainers responsible for securing Bitcoin and other blockchain infrastructure with less sophisticated defensive tools than those available to attackers.

OpenAI’s $1 billion commitment therefore comes at a time when the capabilities of AI-assisted vulnerability discovery are becoming increasingly relevant to both traditional critical infrastructure and the open-source software ecosystem supporting digital assets.
