Standard Chartered Launches Direct Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading for UAE
Standard Chartered has launched direct spot trading in Bitcoin and Ethereum for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates, marking a significant expansion of traditional banking access to digital assets in the Gulf.
According to information shared by Coin Bureau on X, institutional clients can now buy and sell BTC and ETH through the same platforms they use for foreign-exchange trading. Transactions can be settled through the client’s choice of custodian.
The development has also been reported by Reuters and CoinDesk, which said the service is being provided through Standard Chartered’s Dubai International Financial Centre operation. The bank is the first globally systemically important bank to offer institutional spot cryptocurrency trading in the UAE.
Standard Chartered Integrates Crypto Trading With Existing Banking Infrastructure
The integration of Bitcoin and Ether trading into existing foreign-exchange platforms is notable because it allows institutional customers to access spot crypto markets through infrastructure they already use for traditional financial products.
Standard Chartered has been expanding its digital-asset business beyond trading. The bank previously introduced institutional digital-asset trading services integrated with its existing platforms and offers custody solutions for clients seeking regulated infrastructure for cryptocurrency holdings.
For UAE-based institutions, the latest service could reduce some of the operational separation between conventional markets and digital assets. Clients can choose where their trades are settled, including custody arrangements provided by Standard Chartered.
UAE Strengthens Position as Institutional Crypto Hub
The launch comes as the UAE continues to develop its regulated digital-asset market, particularly through financial centers such as Dubai International Financial Centre.
The involvement of a globally systemically important bank also carries broader significance for institutional cryptocurrency adoption. Rather than requiring professional investors to rely exclusively on dedicated crypto exchanges, the service places Bitcoin and Ether trading within a conventional banking environment.
For the broader market, the key issue will be whether other major banks follow with comparable spot-trading services as regulatory frameworks and institutional demand develop across the region.
Standard Chartered’s UAE rollout now provides a concrete test of how quickly traditional financial infrastructure can absorb direct cryptocurrency trading at institutional scale.
