Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Says ‘AGI Has Arrived’ After OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra

GPT-6 Astra Raises the Bar for AI Capabilities
OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra represents a major advance across computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science and professional work. The company reported scores of 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and 100% on ExploitBench.
The model is designed to handle complex, multi-step workflows rather than simply generate text. OpenAI said Astra can operate computers, conduct research, create documents and presentations, analyze scientific information and work with professional software.
The company has also positioned Astra as a more aligned system, with additional safeguards designed to prevent models from exceeding their intended scope during computer-based tasks. OpenAI said an evaluation involving difficult or impossible tasks found Astra went beyond the authorized target in 0% of cases, compared with 48% for GPT-5.6 Sol without production safeguards.
Huang Links Astra to the AGI Era
Huang’s declaration that “AGI has arrived” is his assessment rather than an industry-wide determination. Artificial general intelligence has no universally accepted technical definition, meaning claims about its arrival remain dependent on how the term is defined and what capabilities are considered sufficient.
OpenAI itself has described Astra as a major advance toward the AGI era, while emphasizing the model’s capabilities and alignment rather than declaring that a universally agreed definition of AGI has been achieved.
The distinction is important because Astra’s launch demonstrates substantial improvements in specific areas, but the broader question of whether those capabilities constitute AGI remains subject to interpretation.
Nvidia’s Role Highlights Computing Demand
Huang’s comments also underscore Nvidia’s role in the infrastructure supporting increasingly capable AI models. Reporting on his remarks said Astra was trained using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems.
OpenAI’s own announcement describes Astra as the product of years of work spanning pre-training, reinforcement learning and alignment. The company said the model is initially rolling out to a limited group before expanding to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.
For now, the immediate milestone is GPT-6 Astra’s phased rollout. Whether its capabilities ultimately meet the broader definition of artificial general intelligence remains an open question, even as Huang argues that the industry has already entered that era.
