Bitcoin Seed Generator Uses Radioactive Decay to Produce Entropy
An open-source project called Entropy32 Plus is using radioactive decay as a physical source of entropy for generating Bitcoin BIP39 seed phrases, according to WuBlockchain. The experimental device combines a Geiger counter with cryptographic processing to produce randomness without relying on an internet connection or wireless communications.
The system records the timing of radioactive decay events and processes that data through SHA-256 before converting the resulting output into words from the BIP39 wordlist. The design is intended to keep the seed-generation process offline, with no wireless financial connectivity and no persistent storage of generated seeds.
Entropy32 Plus Uses Physical Randomness for Bitcoin Seeds
Entropy generation is a critical component of cryptographic key creation because predictable randomness can undermine otherwise secure keys. Entropy32 Plus takes an unusual approach by using naturally occurring radioactive decay rather than relying solely on conventional electronic or software-based random-number sources.
The project is nevertheless not being presented as a production-ready security device. Its developer has stated that the quality of its entropy has not yet been validated under NIST SP 800-90B, a U.S. technical standard used to assess entropy sources in random-bit generation systems.
That distinction is particularly important for Bitcoin users considering the device for meaningful holdings. The developer describes Entropy32 Plus as experimental and says it has not undergone an independent audit for securing significant funds.
Offline Design Emphasizes Seed Security
The absence of wireless connectivity and persistent seed storage is intended to reduce potential exposure during seed generation. By keeping the process offline, the project follows a security model in which sensitive wallet information is not transmitted over network-connected systems.
However, offline operation alone does not establish that a hardware entropy source is sufficiently reliable for cryptographic use. Independent testing of the randomness produced by the device remains a key unresolved issue, particularly given the developer's explicit disclosure that NIST SP 800-90B validation has not been completed.
For Bitcoin users, the next important markets development will therefore be whether Entropy32 Plus undergoes independent entropy testing and security auditing before being considered suitable for protecting substantial funds.
