Coinbase Wallet Adds Pulse Mode for Mobile Perpetual Futures Trading
Coinbase has added Pulse Mode to Coinbase Wallet, giving eligible mobile users direct access to supported perpetual futures markets through the wallet application as the company expands its onchain trading capabilities.
The feature was introduced alongside the rebranding of the Base App as Coinbase Wallet. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the new mode is intended to provide a simpler and more engaging trading experience for users accessing perpetual futures through mobile devices.
Pulse Mode focuses on perpetual futures, or perps, which allow traders to take positions on cryptocurrency price movements without a fixed expiration date. According to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Unlike conventional futures contracts, perpetual contracts use funding payments to help keep their prices aligned with the underlying spot market.
The new interface is designed to reduce some of the complexity commonly associated with cryptocurrency derivatives platforms. Users can view supported markets, monitor positions and place eligible orders directly within the wallet environment.
Coinbase Wallet Expands Into Onchain Trading
The introduction of Pulse Mode broadens the role of Coinbase Wallet beyond digital asset storage and management. Users seeking access to derivatives and other advanced onchain services have traditionally relied on separate exchanges or decentralized applications.
By bringing perpetual futures functionality into the mobile wallet, Coinbase is combining additional trading capabilities with an application already used for interacting with digital assets and onchain services.
The move also follows Coinbase’s decision to rename the Base App as Coinbase Wallet, bringing the application under the more widely recognized Coinbase brand. The company has been expanding its onchain strategy across areas including decentralized applications, payments and trading, with Base remaining an important part of that ecosystem.
For eligible users, Pulse Mode can be accessed through the mobile application to explore the perpetual futures markets supported in their jurisdiction. Access is not necessarily available everywhere, however, because cryptocurrency derivatives, leverage and retail trading are subject to different rules across countries.
Users may therefore encounter regional restrictions or eligibility requirements before they can open a perpetual futures position.
Leverage and Funding Costs Remain Key Risks
The simplified mobile interface does not eliminate the risks associated with leveraged cryptocurrency derivatives.
Perpetual futures can generate significant losses when prices move against a position, particularly when leverage reduces the amount of market movement required to affect available collateral. Positions can also face liquidation when collateral falls below applicable requirements.
Funding payments represent another consideration for traders. These periodic payments between market participants help keep perpetual contract prices aligned with spot prices and can affect the overall cost or return of maintaining a position.
Users considering Pulse Mode therefore need to understand leverage, liquidation thresholds, collateral requirements and funding rates before entering a perpetual contract.
The addition of Pulse Mode gives Coinbase Wallet another role in active cryptocurrency trading while the company continues bringing more onchain financial services into a single mobile application.
