Bitcoin Bear Market May Be Ending as Short-Term Holder Signal Turns Bullish

Bitcoin short-term holders remain profitable for nearly a month, strengthening a potential market reversal case as Bitcoin approaches $80,000.

Bitcoin’s short-term holder profitability has remained positive for nearly a month, a market signal that CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost says has historically appeared near major Bitcoin market reversals.

CryptoQuant estimates that short-term holders currently hold $168.2 billion in unrealized profits against $102.6 billion in unrealized losses. That leaves profitable positions ahead by $65.6 billion, producing a profit-to-loss ratio of about 1.64.

The data suggests that roughly 62% of the measured short-term holder value remains in profit. Darkfost has highlighted the persistence of that condition as an important difference from earlier recovery attempts that failed to develop into sustained market reversals.

Bitcoin Short-Term Holder Profitability Remains Elevated

Short-term holders are investors holding Bitcoin for relatively brief periods, making their unrealized profit and loss positions a useful indicator of how recently acquired coins are performing.

According to Darkfost, the current period of sustained profitability is notable because Bitcoin has previously experienced shorter-lived recoveries in which profitable positions quickly gave way to losses.

A similar signal appeared in January, but profitable conditions lasted for less than a week before losing positions once again became dominant.

Historical data from the 2022 and 2023 bear market also shows why the duration of profitability matters. During failed recovery attempts, short-term holders often used price rebounds to exit around their acquisition prices, limiting the strength of the recovery.

The pattern changed during the 2023 recovery, when profitable holdings remained more stable and Bitcoin was able to establish higher price levels.

$80,000 Becomes Key Bitcoin Confirmation Level

Despite the improving holder data, Darkfost has identified $80,000 as an important level for confirming a more durable Bitcoin reversal. Bitcoin was trading around $78,000 on the latest chart referenced in the analysis.

A sustained move above $80,000 would push more recently acquired Bitcoin into unrealized profit and potentially increase the share of short-term holder supply sitting above its acquisition cost.

Holding that level through subsequent pullbacks would also indicate that the market can absorb profit-taking while maintaining stronger support.

However, repeated rejection below $80,000 could weaken the bullish interpretation. If momentum fades, profitable short-term holders could choose to realize gains, potentially increasing selling pressure.

The indicator does not directly measure whether investors are selling. Instead, it tracks whether their holdings are above or below their acquisition prices. Broader market demand and liquidity therefore remain important factors in determining whether Bitcoin can sustain a recovery.

For now, the prolonged period of short-term holder profitability provides support for Darkfost’s view that Bitcoin may be approaching a broader market reversal, while sustained strength above $80,000 would offer a clearer confirmation of that interpretation.

What the Bitcoin Indicator Shows

The short-term holder profit-to-loss data provides a measure of market positioning rather than a definitive prediction of future price direction. A high share of profitable holdings can indicate improved market conditions, but those gains can also become a source of selling if investors decide to lock in profits.

That distinction makes the $80,000 level particularly relevant to Darkfost’s analysis. A sustained move above it, combined with continued short-term holder profitability, would strengthen the recovery structure identified in the analysis. Failure to maintain the level would leave the reversal thesis less confirmed.
