Bitcoin and Ethereum Options Worth Nearly $3 Billion Expire on Deribit

Bitcoin and Ethereum options worth nearly $3 billion expired on Deribit, with ETH traders showing more defensive positioning than Bitcoin.

Approximately $2.9 billion to $3 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum options expired on Deribit, with the settlement highlighting a notable difference in positioning between the two largest cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin options retained a comparatively bullish bias, while Ethereum traders showed greater caution.

According to WuBlockchain, the expiry included about $2.53 billion in Bitcoin options and $406 million to $425 million in Ethereum options. Bitcoin’s put-to-call ratio stood at 0.76, while Ethereum’s rose to 0.89.

Bitcoin Options Show More Constructive Positioning

The Bitcoin put-to-call ratio of 0.76 points to a larger Ethereum proportion of calls relative to puts, a positioning pattern generally associated with a more constructive market bias. However, options ratios are not standalone indicators of future price direction and can reflect hedging activity as well as outright market views.

Bitcoin’s maximum-pain level was approximately $75,000. The level is closely watched around major options expiries because it represents the price at which outstanding options would theoretically result in the greatest aggregate loss for holders at settlement.

The size of the expiry markets the positioning relevant beyond individual contracts, as large derivatives settlements can influence short-term hedging flows and liquidity conditions in spot and futures markets.

Ethereum Traders Adopt a More Defensive Stance

Ethereum presented a more cautious picture. Its put-to-call ratio increased to 0.89, moving closer to parity and indicating relatively stronger defensive positioning compared with Bitcoin.

The maximum-pain level for Ethereum was approximately $2,150. The combination of the higher put-to-call ratio and the expiry size points to greater attention among ETH options participants toward downside protection around the settlement.

The divergence between Bitcoin and Ethereum positioning is notable because both markets were affected by the same broad derivatives event. It provides a snapshot of how traders were managing risk across the two major assets rather than establishing a definitive directional forecast.

Limited Volatility Follows Deribit Settlement

Despite the combined size of the expiry, relatively limited market volatility followed the settlement. The muted reaction indicates that the options expiry did not produce a significant immediate disruption in either market.

The next area of focus for derivatives traders will be positioning in newly opened contracts and whether Ethereum’s more defensive stance persists into subsequent expiries. Changes in put-to-call ratios, open interest and implied volatility will provide a clearer picture of how markets participants are adjusting risk.
