Bitcoin and Ethereum quantum attack research cuts a key benchmark by over 50%, increasing focus on quantum-resistant crypto security.

Researchers have reduced a key benchmark for a potential quantum-computing attack against Bitcoin and Ethereum by more than 50%, highlighting the growing focus on preparing major blockchain networks for future advances in quantum technology.

According to CoinBureau, citing CoinDesk, more than 100 participants spent roughly eight weeks improving a calculation that could eventually help derive private keys from exposed public keys. The research does not mean that Bitcoin or Ethereum can currently be compromised by quantum computers, but it demonstrates how advances in algorithms and circuit efficiency could reduce the resources required for a future attack.

Researchers Improve Quantum Attack Benchmark

The research focuses on the computational requirements associated with attacking elliptic-curve cryptography, a security technology used by both Bitcoin and Ethereum. The ability to significantly reduce those requirements could become increasingly important as quantum computing hardware develops.

Google published its estimates in March but kept the underlying circuit private. Instead, the company released a tool that allows researchers to verify alternative designs and assess their estimated costs.

The initiative has also attracted participation from the cryptocurrency industry. Eigen Labs launched ECDSA.Fail on May 30, giving researchers a platform to submit improvements to quantum attack designs and evaluate their efficiency.

For blockchain networks, improvements in attack efficiency are relevant because the transition to new cryptographic systems can take years. Wallet software, infrastructure, applications and network protocols would all need to accommodate any future migration away from cryptographic methods vulnerable to sufficiently capable quantum computers.

Google Targets 2029 for Quantum-Resistant Migration

Google has set a 2029 target for migrating its cryptographic systems toward quantum-resistant technology. The company has described the timeline as a security deadline rather than a prediction that existing cryptography will necessarily be broken in that year.

That distinction is important for the cryptocurrency market. The latest benchmark reduction does not indicate that Bitcoin or Ethereum are on the verge of being cracked. Instead, it provides another reason for developers and researchers to work on quantum-resistant security before such attacks become technically practical.

Ethereum has also placed quantum resistance on its long-term development roadmap, while the broader Bitcoin ecosystem faces the challenge of determining how and when vulnerable cryptographic mechanisms could eventually be replaced.

The next stage will be continued testing of quantum attack designs and the development of practical migration paths that can protect existing cryptocurrency holdings before quantum computing reaches the required capability.
