Unstoppable Domains Abandons ICANN Plans for .Crypto and .Wallet Domains

Unstoppable Domains will not apply for ICANN’s 2026 gTLD round for .crypto, .wallet and other Web3 domains, citing high costs.

Unstoppable Domains will not seek to bring its Web3-native domain extensions, including .crypto and .wallet, into the traditional internet domain system through the 2026 ICANN application round, founder Matthew Gould said.

The company also plans to refund eligible customers who purchased domains affected by the decision. According to information shared by @WuBlockchain, Gould said the costs associated with regulatory compliance, applications and potential bidding would exceed the company’s expected sales from the domain market.

The decision means the affected Web3 domains will continue operating as on-chain assets that can be used for crypto payments, but they will not be incorporated into the traditional Domain Name System, or DNS, for the time being.

Unstoppable Domains Will Not Apply for 2026 ICANN Round

Unstoppable Domains had considered bringing several Web3-oriented domain extensions into the conventional internet infrastructure overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, commonly known as ICANN.

The extensions mentioned by Gould include .crypto, .wallet, .NFT, .Bitcoin, .DAO and .ZIL.

However, the company did not submit applications for those extensions as part of ICANN’s 2026 new generic top-level domain, or gTLD, round.

Gould said the financial requirements associated with entering the traditional domain system did not make the process commercially viable based on the company’s expectations. The expenses would include compliance requirements, application fees and potential bidding costs if multiple parties sought the same domain extension.

The company therefore decided against proceeding with the applications.

Web3 Domains to Remain On-Chain Assets

Although the domains will not enter the traditional DNS system, they are not being discontinued.

Unstoppable Domains said the extensions will continue functioning as on-chain assets. These domains can be used within the Web3 ecosystem, including for cryptocurrency payments.

Unlike conventional domain names that operate through the DNS, blockchain-based domains can be represented and controlled as digital assets on a blockchain network. They can provide human-readable names that are used in place of longer cryptocurrency wallet addresses.

The distinction between the two systems is central to Unstoppable Domains’ decision. The company’s domains can continue serving their existing Web3 functions without being integrated into the conventional internet naming infrastructure.

For now, however, users should not expect .crypto, .wallet or the other listed extensions to function as standard DNS domain names across the traditional internet.

Company Describes Web3 Domain Market as Small and Niche

Gould characterized the Web3 domain market as “small” and “niche” when explaining the decision.

The assessment was tied to the expected economics of applying for and operating the domains through the ICANN system. According to Gould, the combined costs of compliance, applications and potential bidding would be greater than the sales the company expected to generate.

The decision illustrates the difference between operating blockchain-based domain assets and seeking recognition within the established global DNS infrastructure.

Traditional top-level domains such as .com, .org and country-code extensions are managed through the DNS framework, while Web3 domain systems can operate independently using blockchain technology.

Bringing a Web3 domain extension into the conventional DNS would therefore involve additional regulatory, technical and financial requirements.

Eligible Customers to Receive Refunds

As part of the change, Unstoppable Domains plans to refund customers who qualify under its refund policy.

The company did not provide additional details in the information available regarding the exact number of customers eligible for refunds or the total value of the refunds.

The decision does not eliminate the existing Web3 domain assets. Instead, the domains will continue to operate within their current on-chain environment while remaining outside the traditional DNS system.

Unstoppable Domains’ decision not to participate in the 2026 ICANN gTLD round leaves .crypto, .wallet, .NFT, .Bitcoin, .DAO and .ZIL outside the conventional domain-name system for now, while their use as blockchain-based assets continues.
