U.S. Jobs Report in Focus as Investors Assess December Fed Rate Hike
Stock and cryptocurrency investors are watching the latest U.S. employment report for clues about whether the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in December, following a sharp decline in technology shares and weakness in Bitcoin.
According to Coin Bureau, the report was scheduled for release at 8:30 AM ET, with markets focused on employment growth, annual wage increases and the unemployment rate. The latest developments in the AI trade following the U.S. midterm elections have added to investor attention on the economic data.
Markets React Ahead of the Jobs Data
The Nasdaq fell 5.52% on Thursday, while Bitcoin dropped below $77,000. At the same time, U.S. Treasury yields declined to their lowest levels since early September.
Expectations for a December Federal Reserve rate hike also weakened, with the probability falling to 68%. Investors are now assessing whether the employment figures will provide enough evidence of labor-market strength to keep a potential rate increase under consideration.
Three Employment Indicators in Focus
The first key figure is nonfarm payroll growth. Economists expect the U.S. economy to add 65,000 jobs, compared with 29,000 in September. The difference between the forecast and the previous month's reported figure will be one of the main indicators watched by markets.
Wage growth is another important consideration. Annual wage growth is expected to fall below 3% for the first time in nearly 5½ years. The figure could provide investors with additional information about the pace of wage increases as they assess the broader employment picture.
The unemployment rate is the third major markets indicator. Barclays said a decline to 4.1% would keep a December rate hike in play. That assessment places particular importance on whether the latest report shows a further reduction in unemployment.
Why the Report Matters for Crypto and Stocks
The employment figures arrive as investors reassess positions across technology stocks and digital assets. The Nasdaq's 5.52% decline and Bitcoin's move below $77,000 illustrate the market weakness highlighted by Coin Bureau ahead of the release.
Treasury yields reaching their lowest level since early September and December rate hike odds falling to 68% also show how expectations around Federal Reserve policy have shifted. The payroll, wage and unemployment figures will provide the next set of economic data for investors evaluating the possibility of a December increase.
Coin Bureau identified the 65,000 payroll forecast, the expected decline in annual wage growth below 3%, and Barclays' 4.1% unemployment threshold as the three figures to watch in the report.
