JPMorgan Outlines Four S&P 500 Scenarios for the 2026 U.S. Midterm Elections
JPMorgan has outlined four possible U.S. midterm election outcomes and their projected effects on the S&P 500, with a Republican victory in both chambers of Congress carrying the highest potential stock market gains but only a 7% probability in the estimates shared by Coin Bureau.
The projections compare the potential performance of the benchmark U.S. stock index under different political outcomes. They indicate that the expected market response varies depending on which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate.
JPMorgan's Four Election Scenarios
A Democratic victory in both chambers is assigned the highest probability, at 73%. Under this scenario, JPMorgan sees the S&P 500 ranging from a decline of 0.25% to a gain of 0.50%.
A Republican victory in both the House and Senate has a 7% probability in the estimates. However, this outcome carries the strongest projected performance for the S&P 500, with a potential gain ranging from 1.00% to 1.25%.
The third scenario involves Democrats winning the House while Republicans retain control of the Senate. JPMorgan assigns this outcome a 22% probability, with the S&P 500 projected to gain between 0.50% and 1.00%.
The final scenario, in which Republicans win the House while Democrats control the Senate, has a 1% probability. Under that arrangement, the projected S&P 500 performance ranges from a gain of 0.25% to 0.75%.
Highest Projected Gains Carry a Low Probability
The figures highlight a contrast between the most likely political outcome and the scenario associated with the strongest projected stock market performance. A Democratic victory in both chambers has a 73% probability but offers a relatively narrow projected S&P 500 range, while a Republican sweep has only a 7% probability despite carrying the highest potential gains.
The Republican House and Democratic Senate scenario is assigned an even lower probability of 1%, although its projected market gain remains positive at 0.25% to 0.75%. This means the Republican sweep is the least likely of the two scenarios associated with the strongest potential market outcomes only when compared with its own 7% probability; the split-control scenario has a lower stated probability overall.
Coin Bureau shared the figures while describing a potential markets Republican loss in the midterms as the worst outcome for U.S. stocks. The post attributed the scenario estimates to JPMorgan, but did not provide further details about the bank's methodology, the time horizon for the projections, or the assumptions behind the probability estimates.
The figures should therefore be read as scenario-based projections rather than guaranteed market movements. Across all four outcomes, JPMorgan's projected S&P 500 ranges extend from a possible 0.25% decline under a Democratic sweep to a potential 1.25% gain under a Republican sweep.
