225 Million XRP Back $151.8 Million in Maple Loans as December Maturities Near
Maple Finance has approximately 225.08 million XRP, valued at about $281 million, pledged as collateral for $151.8 million in stablecoin loans, with two major repayment deadlines approaching in December 2026 and another scheduled for January 2027. The maturities could affect how much XRP remains committed to institutional lending, depending on whether borrowers repay, refinance or extend their financing.
The positions, disclosed through Maple's syrupUSDC and syrupUSDT transparency dashboards, illustrate how institutions can access dollar-denominated liquidity against XRP holdings without immediately selling the cryptocurrency. However, the upcoming deadlines do not necessarily mean the collateral will be sold or returned to the market.
Maple's XRP Collateral Supports Three Loans
Maple's disclosures show that 142.77 million XRP supports its syrupUSDC product, while another 82.31 million XRP backs syrupUSDT positions. Together, the collateral is valued at approximately $281 million.
The assets secure around $96.61 million in USDC loans and $55.19 million in USDT borrowing, bringing the combined nominal stablecoin principal to approximately $151.8 million.
At the reported valuations, the positions were approximately 179% to 189% collateralized. This means the borrowers had pledged XRP worth substantially more than their outstanding loan principal.
The three positions have different repayment schedules, with two maturities falling in December 2026 and the remaining deadline in January 2027. The approaching dates place attention on borrowers' next steps and whether the existing collateral arrangements will continue.
The lending structure also separates the source of financing from the location of the collateral. Maple's loans originate from Ethereum-based liquidity pools, while the XRP collateral remains in native custody on the XRP Ledger.
Repayment Does Not Necessarily Mean XRP Selling
As the loans approach maturity, borrowers have several options. They can repay their outstanding obligations and seek the release of their collateral, refinance their existing loans or negotiate new borrowing arrangements that keep XRP pledged.
These alternatives matter because collateralized XRP can remain committed to lending for months, creating a different type of demand from cryptocurrency trading or short-term payment settlement. Whether that commitment continues will depend on the terms of any repayment or refinancing arrangements.
Ripple has also explored institutional credit models involving digital assets. RippleX previously described XRP collateral as a potentially important use case for institutional lending.
However, refinancing is not guaranteed. A sufficiently sharp decline in XRP's market price could cause a position to breach its contractual collateral requirements, potentially requiring borrowers to add assets or reduce their debt.
Under Maple's lending procedures, an unresolved margin call can eventually result in collateral liquidation. Such an outcome could turn pledged XRP into market sales, although there is currently no confirmed indication that any of the three positions is facing liquidation.
Maple Accounts for a Large Share of Reported XRP Ledger DeFi Value
The scale of Maple's XRP-backed lending also affects how decentralized finance activity on the XRP Ledger is represented in reported figures. DefiLlama attributed approximately $281 million in XRP Ledger DeFi value to Maple, compared with roughly $318 million across the network.
Based on those figures, Maple represented approximately 88% of the reported total at the time. The figures require context, however, because the financing originates from Ethereum-based liquidity pools even though the XRP collateral remains on the XRP Ledger.
Other projects are developing related XRP-backed borrowing and credit services. Flare has introduced borrowing against XRP using RLUSD, while more than 145 million FXRP had been minted through its network by late September, according to the source material.
Institutional credit initiatives involving Ripple and Clearpool are also developing additional lending infrastructure. The upcoming Maple loan maturities provide a near-term point to watch, but their eventual effect on XRP collateral demand will depend on repayment decisions, refinancing terms and collateral requirements.
