U.S. ISM Services PMI Slows to 54.9 in September as Prices Paid Rise to 74.0
The U.S. services sector continued to expand in September, but growth slowed as the ISM Services PMI fell to 54.9 from 55.4, according to data highlighted by Coin Bureau. The report also showed stronger employment conditions and a sharp rise in Prices Paid, pointing to persistent markets inflation pressure.
Services Growth Slows
The decline in the ISM Services PMI indicates that activity across the U.S. services sector remained in expansion territory in September, although the pace of growth weakened from the previous month. The index fell from 55.4 to 54.9, with readings above 50 indicating expansion.
Coin Bureau said in a post on X that the latest figures show financial services growth is slowing while remaining firmly in expansion territory. The moderation in the headline index comes alongside changes in employment and prices that could complicate the outlook for U.S. monetary policy.
Employment and Inflation Pressure
Employment conditions improved at the same time, pointing to stronger labor demand within the services sector. The combination of slower overall services growth and improved employment presents a mixed picture for the U.S. economy, with demand in the labor market remaining comparatively firm.
Prices Paid also increased, reaching 74.0 in September. The rise points to continued price pressure among services businesses and adds to evidence of persistent inflation within the sector.
Coin Bureau said the combination of stronger labor demand and elevated Prices Paid gives the Federal Reserve less room to turn dovish quickly. The latest data therefore adds a further consideration for monetary policy as officials assess the balance between economic growth, employment and inflation.
The September figures leave the services sector expanding at a slower pace than in August, while the improvement in employment and Prices Paid rising to 74.0 underscore the inflationary pressures highlighted by the latest reading.
