Trump Says US Could Take Stakes in OpenAI, Anthropic and Other AI Firms
Trump made the remarks in an interview with TIME on Sept. 28, published Oct. 1. According to Watcher.Guru, which shared the comments on X, the president indicated that the government could pursue equity arrangements with AI companies.
Trump Points to Government Investment Model
The comments suggest that the administration is considering government ownership stakes as an alternative to nationalizing major AI companies. Trump has previously discussed ways for the American public to benefit financially from the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence industry.
When asked by TIME whether the government could take stakes in companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, Trump said, “I might. Maybe I could do that.” He also referred to other deals involving government investment in private companies.
Trump's remarks come after the administration took a 9.9% stake in Intel under an agreement announced in August 2025. The deal involved $8.9 billion in government funding in exchange for shares and gave Washington a financial interest in the chipmaker.
The president has pointed to the Intel arrangement as an example of how the government could structure investments in strategically important technology companies.
No Specific AI Investment Deal Announced
Trump did not announce a finalized agreement with OpenAI, Anthropic or another AI company as part of the TIME interview. He also did not provide terms, investment amounts or a timetable for any potential government stake.
The possibility of government ownership in AI companies has been discussed publicly for months. In June, Trump said he was considering ways for the government to take stakes in leading AI companies and allow the public to benefit from the sector's financial growth.
Earlier reporting also indicated that OpenAI had discussed the possibility of a 5% government stake. Reuters reported in July that the Trump administration and Anthropic had not discussed the government taking a stake in the company at that time, underscoring that discussions involving individual AI firms may differ.
AI Firms Face Increasing Government Scrutiny
The comments come as Washington increases its involvement in the development and oversight of advanced artificial intelligence systems. OpenAI and Anthropic are among the companies facing growing attention from U.S. policymakers over AI safety, national security and the economic implications of increasingly capable models.
The administration has also pursued voluntary commitments from major technology companies. On Sept. 29, Trump announced an agreement involving leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Meta, Google and xAI that calls for companies to implement internal controls and use independent auditors to assess AI systems.
For now, Trump's latest comments leave open whether any AI company will actually receive a direct government investment. No specific transaction with OpenAI or Anthropic was announced in the interview.
