Tim Draper Calls Bitcoin Ownership “Irresponsible” as He Warns of a Shift Away From Fiat Currencies
Venture capitalist Tim Draper has renewed his warning that individuals and businesses risk being left behind if bitcoin becomes a dominant form of payment, arguing that failing to own the cryptocurrency is “irresponsible.” In comments posted on Oct. 28, Draper outlined a potential shift in which merchants move from accepting bitcoin alongside traditional payment methods to relying on it exclusively.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s irresponsible to not own bitcoin,” said Draper, founder and managing partner of venture capital firm Draper Associates.
He predicted that broader adoption of bitcoin could reduce demand for dollars and other government-issued currencies, potentially triggering withdrawals from banks.
“Then people will not value dollars or fiat, and there will be a run on the banks. Eventually, the world will never be the same,” Draper wrote.
Tim Draper Renews Bitcoin Ownership Warning
Draper’s latest remarks follow earlier calls for businesses to prepare for greater cryptocurrency adoption. At the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas, he argued that companies should maintain a bitcoin treasury allocation of 5% to 15%, describing it as irresponsible for businesses not to hold the asset.
His broader recommendations have also extended to households and governments. In remarks on Sept. 10, Draper urged families to maintain six months of expenses in bitcoin, companies to hold enough bitcoin to cover four weeks of payroll, and governments to allocate part of their treasury holdings to the cryptocurrency.
These recommendations reflect Draper’s view that bitcoin could play a larger role in financial planning and business operations. His latest warning, however, describes a potential future scenario rather than an established shift away from conventional currencies.
Draper Maintains a $250,000 Bitcoin Price Target
Draper has also repeatedly predicted that bitcoin would reach $250,000. He first made that forecast in April 2018, projecting the milestone for 2022. After that deadline passed, he extended the timeline to mid-2023 and later suggested 2025, but the target was not reached within those periods.
On April 14, Draper renewed the forecast with an 18-month timeframe, implying a target date around October 2027.
His calls for bitcoin reserves have also been shaped by concerns about access to operating funds during banking disruptions. Following Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse in 2023, Draper advised startups to keep at least two payrolls’ worth of cash in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, alongside six months of short-term cash in each of two banks.
Bitcoin Payment Services Still Support Dollar Conversion
Existing payment systems show that businesses can accept bitcoin without abandoning conventional currency pricing or settlement. Square’s bitcoin payment service allows eligible U.S. sellers outside New York to receive payments in bitcoin or choose immediate conversion into dollars.
Square began rolling out its bitcoin payment offering on Nov. 10, 2025, using the Lightning Network. The service gives merchants the option to accept cryptocurrency while retaining the ability to receive traditional currency.
PayPal, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker PYPL, also supports cryptocurrency payments through its Pay with Crypto service for eligible U.S. merchants. Customers can pay using bitcoin and other supported cryptocurrencies, while participating businesses receive funds in their local currency without needing to hold the digital assets.
Restaurant Adoption Adds Another Bitcoin Payment Option
Restaurant chain Steak ‘n Shake began accepting bitcoin at its U.S. locations on May 16, 2025, using payment infrastructure provider Speed. The rollout added bitcoin as a payment option alongside cash and cards.
These services illustrate how bitcoin can be integrated into existing commerce without requiring merchants to stop using dollars. While Draper predicts a future in which some businesses could eventually accept bitcoin exclusively, the payment examples described here also demonstrate models that allow cryptocurrency and traditional money to coexist.
