South Korea Holds Emergency Meeting After KOSPI Plunges 8%, Triggering Trading Halt

South Korea’s KOSPI plunged as much as 9.2%, triggering a 20-minute trading halt as persistent U.S. inflation raised rate-hike concerns.

South Korea’s KOSPI stock index falls sharply, triggering a 20-minute trading halt and an emergency regulatory meeting.

South Korea’s financial regulator held an emergency meeting after the benchmark KOSPI stock index suffered a sharp sell-off, falling as much as 9.2% and triggering a temporary trading suspension. The decline followed a technology-led rout on Wall Street, as persistent U.S. inflation strengthened expectations of further interest rate hikes, according to Coin Bureau.

The KOSPI plunged to 5,450 during the session, its lowest level since July 29. When losses reached 8%, trading was suspended for 20 minutes under the index’s circuit-breaker mechanism, marking its first such interruption since July.

KOSPI Triggers Circuit Breaker After Sharp Decline

The trading halt underscored the severity of the sell-off in South Korea’s equity market. The circuit breaker was activated after the KOSPI’s losses crossed the 8% threshold, temporarily suspending trading for 20 minutes.

According to Coin Bureau, the latest interruption was the KOSPI’s 10th circuit breaker this year and the 16th in the index’s history. The figures place the latest market disruption among a series of significant trading interruptions recorded by the benchmark.

Despite the intraday decline of as much as 9.2%, the KOSPI closed down 7.57%. The closing loss extended its decline to seven consecutive sessions, representing the index’s longest losing streak since September 2024.

Wall Street Sell-Off Adds to Market Pressure

The decline in South Korean stocks followed a technology-led sell-off on Wall Street. Coin Bureau linked the broader market pressure to persistent U.S. inflation, which raised expectations that further interest rate increases could be needed.

Sticky inflation can complicate the outlook for monetary policy by making it more difficult for central banks to bring price pressures under control. Expectations of higher interest rates can also weigh on equities, particularly when investors reassess the outlook for financial conditions and valuations. In this instance, the reported trigger for the sell-off was the technology-led decline in U.S. markets alongside renewed rate-hike expectations.

South Korea’s financial regulator convened an emergency meeting following the sharp decline in the domestic benchmark. The meeting came as the KOSPI experienced a steep intraday drop, a circuit-breaker suspension and a seventh consecutive daily loss.

The index’s closing decline of 7.57% extended its losing streak to seven sessions, the longest since September 2024, while the trading suspension marked its first circuit breaker since July. Coin Bureau reported that the latest event was the 10th circuit breaker for the KOSPI this year and the 16th in its history.
