Midnight Network transaction activity increased sharply after permissionless smart contracts launched, alongside planned privacy features for Solana wallets.

Midnight Network, a blockchain project linked to Cardano, recorded a 9,117% increase in daily transactions between October 1 and October 8, as activity rose following the launch of permissionless smart contracts. Data from Midnight Explorer showed transactions climbing from 284 to 26,178 over the period, representing an approximately 92-fold increase.

The growth followed Midnight's September 28 introduction of permissionless smart contracts, which allows developers to deploy contracts on its Preprod network without mandatory security reviews. The change is intended to simplify deployment and expand opportunities for building applications on the network.

Midnight Smart Contracts Expand Application Development

The new deployment model also allows applications to deploy smart contracts on behalf of users, reducing onboarding requirements. The capabilities could support development across decentralized finance, gaming and privacy-focused applications.

The reported transaction figures indicate a sharp increase in network activity during the week, although the data alone does not establish how much of that growth came from individual applications or sustained user adoption.

Midnight Plans Privacy Features for Solana Wallets

Midnight is also working to extend privacy-focused financial services to Solana through its planned Ledger v9 upgrade. Midnight Foundation Chief Technology Officer Sebastien Guillemot said the integration is designed to support private swaps and decentralized finance interactions through existing Solana wallets without requiring users to install additional software.

The planned features include shielded tokens, private transactions and sponsored application fees supported by Midnight's NIGHT dual-token economic model. Once the integration is completed, Solana users are expected to be able to access supported privacy applications directly through their existing wallets.

Guillemot said the integration remains on testnet, with a mainnet rollout scheduled for later in 2026. The functionality is therefore still under development rather than generally available on mainnet.

Cardano Releases Ouroboros and Plutus Updates

Separately, Cardano developer Input Output reported technical updates to the network's consensus and smart contract infrastructure. Its weekly development report confirmed the release of Ouroboros consensus versions 5.0 and 5.1.0.0.

Developers also released Plutus version 1.71.0.0, which introduces the complete Plutus V4 script context for integration into node version 11.2. The update includes Plutus Core language version 1.2.0 and cost models supporting keepPolicies and dropPolicies under CIP-0168.

The Cardano updates are taking place alongside Midnight's reported transaction growth and its planned Solana integration. Whether the recent increase in Midnight activity translates into sustained usage will depend on continued developer engagement and demand for applications built on the network.
