Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon discusses tokenization, blockchain infrastructure, digital assets and emerging financial market technologies.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon sees tokenization and blockchain-based financial infrastructure as potential sources of growth for Wall Street, even as decentralized finance (DeFi), prediction markets and automated trading technologies emerge as possible challenges to traditional financial institutions.

Speaking during Goldman Sachs' third-quarter earnings call on October 13, Solomon described tokenization as an important trend across asset classes. Rather than viewing new market structures solely as competitive threats, he argued that they could help the bank develop additional products, reach more clients and expand its addressable market.

Goldman Sachs Assesses Emerging Trading Technologies

Evercore ISI analyst Glenn Schorr raised questions about how tokenization, agentic trading, DeFi vaults and prediction markets could affect Goldman Sachs' trading operations. Solomon acknowledged the technological changes but pointed to the evolution of electronic equities trading as an example of how the bank had previously adapted to market disruption.

"Today, tokenization is obviously an important trend. We see it across asset classes," Solomon said during the call.

His comments reflected an expectation that new financial technologies could create additional business opportunities rather than simply displace established intermediaries. However, Solomon did not announce plans to launch a Goldman Sachs prediction market, DeFi vault or agentic trading product. Instead, he discussed these developments as part of a broader transformation in financial market infrastructure.

Tokenized Bonds and Money Market Funds Already in Development

Goldman Sachs has invested in digital asset companies and financial market infrastructure over several years. The bank has also developed GS DAP, its proprietary platform for blockchain-based financial assets.

Solomon highlighted several existing tokenization activities, including bonds, money market funds and real estate products for certain clients. These initiatives demonstrate how blockchain technology can be applied to traditional financial assets without requiring the bank to abandon its established business model.

Goldman Sachs also participated in the July launch of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. (DTCC) tokenization service. The bank is evaluating applications that could operate at greater scale, according to the discussion.

Tokenization involves representing ownership of assets digitally. The approach could improve transfers, recordkeeping and settlement processes. Solomon also identified potential benefits in cost reduction, automation and liquidity across different asset classes.

Nevertheless, he cautioned against expectations of an immediate transformation across financial markets, describing current tokenization activity as small.

Goldman Sachs Calls for Clearer Digital Asset Regulations

Regulatory certainty remains another important consideration as financial institutions explore blockchain-based products. Solomon confirmed that Goldman Sachs had publicly supported passage of the CLARITY legislation, despite reservations about some of its provisions.

"We were publicly supportive of CLARITY passing. It wasn't perfect, but we thought it would be good to give the market more clarity, no pun intended, and ensure investor protection," Solomon said.

He added that regulatory agencies were already working toward clearer market rules, with Goldman Sachs participating in those discussions. Clearer requirements could help determine which digital asset products financial institutions can offer to institutional clients.

Goldman Sachs Reports $18.68 Billion in Quarterly Revenue

The bank's comments on financial innovation came alongside strong reported results for its established markets business. Goldman Sachs generated $18.68 billion in quarterly net revenue, while equities revenue increased 72% year over year to $6.4 billion.

Equities financing revenue reached a record $3.37 billion, nearly doubling from a year earlier. Chief Financial Officer Denis Coleman also reported $12.7 billion in combined financing revenue across equities and fixed income, currencies and commodities during the first nine months.

These figures illustrate the scale of the existing financial operations that emerging blockchain-based services could challenge. They also highlight the resources Goldman Sachs can deploy to adapt to changes in market structure.

For now, tokenization represents a more established area of investment and experimentation for Goldman Sachs than prediction markets, DeFi vaults or agentic trading products, which were discussed as potential competitive pressures. The bank has identified possible applications for blockchain technology, but the eventual revenue contribution from these emerging markets remains uncertain.
