EU Crypto Firms Told to Remove Tether’s USDT by January 8, 2027
Crypto firms operating under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework are being told to cease services tied to non-compliant stablecoins, with Tether’s USDT among the assets affected, according to Coin Bureau.
USDT Faces MiCA Compliance Deadline
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) said MiCA-licensed firms “should cease providing services tied to non-compliant stablecoins.” The guidance affects a broad range of crypto services, including trading, exchange, custody, transfers, order execution, advice and portfolio services.
Coin Bureau reported that the compliance deadline for EU crypto firms is January 8, 2027. The development places Tether’s USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin by the supply figure cited in the report, at the center of the regulatory requirements.
Tether’s USDT Among Affected Stablecoins
According to Coin Bureau, USDT has a supply of $184 billion and is not MiCA-compliant because Tether lacks an EU e-money licence. As a result, firms licensed under MiCA could be required to stop providing services connected to the stablecoin by the January 8, 2027 deadline.
The services covered by the ESMA guidance extend beyond direct trading. They include exchange and custody activities, transfers, order execution, investment advice and portfolio-related services, meaning the requirements could affect how compliant crypto-asset service providers handle USDT across multiple parts of their businesses.
More Than 240 Firms Could Be Affected
Coin Bureau said more than 240 MiCA-licensed firms could be affected by the regulatory requirement. The figure reflects the number of firms operating under the EU’s MiCA licensing framework that may need to address their exposure to non-compliant stablecoins.
The January 8, 2027 deadline therefore gives affected firms a specific date by which services tied to non-compliant stablecoins such as USDT would need to be addressed under the guidance cited by Coin Bureau.
