ESMA Urges EU Crypto Firms to Exit Non-MiCA Stablecoin Exposure by Jan. 8, 2027

ESMA urges EU crypto firms to exit non-MiCA stablecoin exposure by Jan. 8, 2027, covering trading, custody, transfers and advice.

ESMA guidance urges EU crypto firms to exit non-MiCA-compliant stablecoin exposure by Jan. 8, 2027

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has urged national regulators to require crypto-asset service providers across the European Union to fully exit stablecoin-related exposure that does not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) by Jan. 8, 2027, according to Wu Blockchain.

ESMA Sets January Deadline

The guidance, issued on Thursday, calls on national regulators to ensure that crypto-asset service providers wind down exposure to stablecoins that fall outside MiCA requirements within three months. The process must be completed no later than Jan. 8, 2027, setting a specific deadline for firms operating under the EU's crypto regulatory framework.

The guidance applies to a broad range of activities involving non-MiCA-compliant stablecoin exposure. These include trading, custody, transfers and investment advice, meaning firms may need to review multiple areas of their services as they work toward the deadline.

Limited Wind-Down Services Allowed

ESMA's guidance does not require licensed firms to immediately cease every activity connected with affected stablecoins. Instead, firms may provide limited services needed to wind down existing exposure, including liquidation, closing-out exchanges and withdrawals.

Those wind-down activities are subject to close supervision. The approach allows firms to facilitate the orderly reduction of existing exposure while restricting the continuation of services involving stablecoins that do not comply with MiCA.

Implications for EU Crypto Service Providers

The guidance places responsibility on national regulators to require affected crypto-asset service providers to complete the transition within the specified period. Firms offering trading, custody, transfer or investment advice services involving non-MiCA-compliant stablecoins therefore face a Jan. 8, 2027 deadline for completing the required exit.

The measure also distinguishes between ongoing exposure and limited activities necessary to close existing positions. Under the guidance, liquidation, closing-out exchanges and withdrawals can remain available during the wind-down process, but only under close regulatory supervision.

According to Wu Blockchain, ESMA's request gives EU crypto firms three months to exit stablecoin-related exposure that does not comply with MiCA, with Jan. 8, 2027 established as the latest date for completing the process.
