U.S. Inflation Data Put Markets on Alert Ahead of September Fed
U.S. inflation data due this week is set to provide an important test for financial markets ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 policy meeting, with investors watching whether price pressures are cooling or proving more persistent than expected.
According to CoinBureau, today’s Producer Price Index (PPI) and Friday’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) are among the key economic releases investors will assess before the Federal Reserve makes its next rate decision. The reports could influence expectations for interest rates, Treasury yields and risk-sensitive assets including stocks and cryptocurrencies.
PPI Provides Early Inflation Signal
The PPI report is scheduled for release on September 10 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The August reading measures changes in prices received by domestic producers and provides an earlier view of price pressures moving through the production side of the economy.
While PPI is not the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of consumer inflation, changes in producer prices can provide markets participants with additional information about cost pressures facing businesses. Investors will therefore examine the report alongside other economic indicators for signs that inflation is becoming more or less persistent.
The release comes one day before the next major inflation test.
CPI Takes Center Stage Before Fed Decision
The BLS is scheduled to publish the August Consumer Price Index on September 11 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. CPI measures changes in the prices consumers pay for goods and services and remains one of the most closely watched indicators of U.S. inflation.
The two reports arrive just days before the Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 meeting, leaving investors with limited time to adjust their expectations. Softer-than-expected inflation readings could strengthen expectations for a less restrictive policy outlook, potentially supporting stocks and cryptocurrencies. Conversely, hotter inflation could reinforce expectations for higher-for-longer interest rates, putting upward pressure on Treasury yields and weighing on risk assets.
For crypto markets, the significance extends beyond inflation itself. Bitcoin and other digital assets have increasingly traded alongside broader macroeconomic expectations, making changes in rate expectations an important source of volatility.
The immediate focus now shifts to the August PPI release, followed by Friday’s CPI report, as investors assess whether the latest inflation data will alter expectations heading into the Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 meeting.
