U.S. Bank Completes Stablecoin Pilot on Stellar With Core Banking Controls
The pilot used USBDC, U.S. Bank’s proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, in a live cross-border payment between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe, according to information published by U.S. Bank on September 9, 2026.
U.S. Bank Tests Onchain Money Movement
The transaction marks a practical test of how a regulated financial institution can use a public blockchain without separating blockchain-based activity from its established banking infrastructure.
Rather than operating as an isolated blockchain experiment, the pilot connected the onchain movement of USBDC with U.S. Bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform. The system supports functions including stablecoin minting, payment redemption, freezing and clawback capabilities.
U.S. Bank said the pilot demonstrated its ability to transfer value onchain while maintaining the controls used across its existing financial and operational systems. That integration is central to the bank’s approach as it explores digital asset and money movement capabilities.
The transaction also involved entities in North America and Europe, giving the pilot a cross-border payment component rather than limiting the test to a domestic transfer. U.S. Bank described USBDC as one of the bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain.
Stellar Provides the Blockchain Infrastructure
The pilot was conducted on Stellar, a blockchain that U.S. Bank has been evaluating for institutional financial applications.
The Stellar Development Foundation said the transaction represents a move beyond a conventional sandbox experiment because the stablecoin was processed through U.S. Bank’s Digital Asset Platform while remaining connected to the bank’s existing systems and controls.
The arrangement also reflects an earlier relationship between U.S. Bank and the Stellar Development Foundation focused on stablecoin issuance and digital asset infrastructure. U.S. Bank had previously tested custom stablecoin issuance on the network.
For U.S. Bank, the pilot provides a framework for testing blockchain-based transfers without removing the financial controls required by its existing banking operations. The approach allows the bank to examine onchain settlement alongside established processes for risk and compliance.
Further Institutional Applications Under Review
U.S. Bank has identified several potential applications for the infrastructure, including liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury operations. The bank said these areas are among the use cases it is continuing to evaluate with the Stellar Development Foundation.
The pilot therefore remains part of a broader digital asset strategy rather than a declaration of a full-scale replacement of existing payment infrastructure. The immediate milestone is the completed live transaction using USBDC on Stellar, with further institutional applications still under evaluation.
