OKX CEO Warns High-Risk Accounts Could Face Service Termination
OKX may terminate services for accounts confirmed to be involved in high-risk or illegal activities, CEO Star Xu said, as the cryptocurrency exchange tightens scrutiny of transactions flagged by its risk-control systems.
According to information published by WuBlockchain, Xu was responding to a user whose transfer from a sports betting platform to OKX had triggered a risk-control review. He said deposits originating from high-risk addresses can lead to enhanced anti-money laundering (AML) checks and additional compliance procedures.
OKX Expands Scrutiny of High-Risk Transactions
Xu said risk-control reviews can last 15 days or longer depending on the circumstances. During that period, certain account functions and funds may be restricted while the exchange assesses the transaction and its underlying source of funds.
For accounts ultimately confirmed to be associated with high-risk or illegal activities, OKX may terminate services directly, according to Xu.
The warning underscores the growing importance of transaction monitoring and source-of-funds verification across major cryptocurrency exchanges. Platforms operating in multiple jurisdictions are subject to AML and counter-financial-crime requirements that can require them to investigate transactions linked to potentially illicit activity.
Xu also singled out funds obtained through channels including escrowed transactions in Telegram groups, Huiwang and its variants as potentially carrying significant compliance risks. He did not indicate that every transaction involving those channels is necessarily illegal, but warned users about the risks surrounding the origin and movement of such funds.
Source of Funds Remains a Key Compliance Issue
OKX’s position highlights a broader shift in the crypto industry toward more rigorous transaction screening. Exchanges increasingly rely on automated risk controls alongside manual investigations to identify transactions that may require additional review.
For users, the restrictions can extend beyond individual deposits if an account becomes associated with suspicious transaction activity. Xu urged users not to use OKX accounts for money laundering, fraud, illicit fund transfers or other illegal activities.
The immediate compliance question for affected users is whether they can provide sufficient information to establish a legitimate source of funds when a transaction triggers enhanced review.
