Google Launches Gemini 3.8 Flash With Stronger Coding Capabilities
Google has introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash, a new artificial intelligence model focused on coding, agentic workflows and complex reasoning, following reports that the company was preparing to release the system as soon as Wednesday.
The launch was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, as cited by @Whale Insider, which said Google’s AI research unit was preparing Gemini 3.8 Flash for release. The model was reportedly known internally as “Skimaki” and had shown stronger coding performance in internal testing.
Gemini 3.8 Targets Coding and AI Agents
Google described Gemini 3.8 Flash as its most intelligent “workhorse” model, with improvements over Gemini 3.7 Flash across software engineering, agentic tasks and specialized multi-step reasoning. The company said the new model maintains the speed and low-cost positioning of the previous Flash generation.
The release comes only weeks after Google introduced Gemini 3.7 Flash on Aug. 13. That model was positioned around coding, software engineering and agent-based workflows, underscoring Google's increasingly rapid development cycle for its lower-cost AI systems.
Google has also set an introductory price of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens for Gemini 3.8 Flash, according to its official announcement.
Google Faces Intensifying AI Competition
The latest release arrives as Google competes with OpenAI and Anthropic across increasingly important areas such as software development and autonomous AI agents.
According to the WSJ report, Google engineers preferred Gemini 3.8 Flash over Anthropic’s Opus model in head-to-head testing through Jetski, the company’s internal coding tool. Such internal comparisons do not establish an independent performance ranking, but they highlight the importance Google places on coding as AI companies compete for developer and enterprise workloads.
The Flash series is strategically important because highly capable models must increasingly balance intelligence with inference costs, speed and scalability. Google’s latest model is designed to serve as a production-oriented system rather than simply a showcase of frontier capabilities.

The release gives developers and enterprises another option for deploying AI agents and software-engineering workloads at scale.
