Fed Raises Rates 25 Bps, Signals More Hikes in 2026
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, with policymakers citing elevated inflation and continued strength in the U.S. economy.
The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously, 12-0, for the increase while maintaining its policy of keeping ample reserves in the banking system, according to information shared by Wu Blockchain.
Fed Says Economy Continues to Expand
The FOMC said the U.S. economy continues to expand at a solid pace, pointing to resilient domestic spending, strong productivity growth and capital investment.
The labor market was described as broadly stable, while the committee also noted that uncertainty remains elevated. Geopolitical developments were identified as one source of that uncertainty.
The rate increase comes as inflation remains elevated. The FOMC said the move is intended to support a timelier return of inflation to its 2% target.
The unanimous decision means all 12 voting members of the FOMC supported the 25-basis-point increase.
16 Officials See Another 2026 Hike
Wall Street Journal reporter Nick Timiraos reported that 16 of the 18 FOMC participants projected at least one additional rate increase in 2026.
The projections indicate that most policymakers continue to see room for further tightening next year, although the individual projections do not necessarily represent a commitment to a specific future decision.
Timiraos also reported that few officials projected interest rates to finish 2027 below 4%. That outlook points to a federal funds rate that could remain at relatively elevated levels beyond 2026, based on the officials' projections.
Inflation Remains Key Policy Consideration
The Federal Reserve's latest decision reflects the committee's continued focus on inflation while assessing economic growth and labor-market conditions.
The FOMC said domestic spending remains resilient and that productivity growth and capital investment are strong. At the same time, policymakers acknowledged elevated uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook.
Geopolitical developments were specifically cited as a factor contributing to that uncertainty, adding another consideration for policymakers as they assess economic conditions.
Rate Decision Sets Next Policy Outlook
The new federal funds target range of 3.75% to 4.00% takes effect following the FOMC's unanimous decision.
With 16 of 18 officials reportedly projecting at least one more rate increase in 2026, the next policy decisions will remain closely tied to the financial committee's assessment of inflation, economic activity and labor-market conditions.
The FOMC's stated objective remains a return of inflation to its 2% target while continuing to assess the broader economic outlook.
