U.S. prosecutors said Ding stole more than 2,000 pages of confidential information while working at Google between approximately May 2022 and April 2023. According to evidence presented at trial, Ding secretly became affiliated with two China-based technology companies while still employed by Google. A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Ding in January 2026 on seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of trade-secret theft following an 11-day trial. The Justice Department described the case as the first conviction involving AI-related economic espionage charges.
