Cronos Says $9.19 Million Remains Unrecovered After Tectonic Exploit
Cronos has confirmed that about $9.19 million remains unrecovered following an exploit involving the Tectonic lending protocol, despite a blockchain rollback that restored approximately $111.2 million in affected funds.
According to Cronos, the incident began on August 30 when an attacker manipulated Tectonic's collateral system and used the inflated value of TONIC, the protocol's governance token, to borrow approximately $120.4 million across nine markets.
The incident prompted Cronos validators to halt the network and later roll back the blockchain to a point before the exploit. While the intervention reversed most of the unauthorized borrowing, funds that had already moved through bridges, exchanges or other networks could not be recovered through the rollback.
Cronos Exploit Centered on Manipulated TONIC Collateral
The attack relied on contracts designed to inflate the apparent value of TONIC. Because the token had limited liquidity, the attacker was able to distort its market price and consequently increase the value assigned to TONIC deposited as collateral on Tectonic.
Roughly 10 minutes after deploying the contracts, the attacker used the artificially inflated collateral position to obtain loans across nine Tectonic markets.
Cronos said it detected the malicious activity about 36 minutes after the attack began. Validators then coordinated an emergency response designed to prevent further transactions involving the compromised system.
Operations were halted at block 90,907,150. After reaching consensus, validators approved a rollback to block 90,896,188, which was the last block recorded before the exploit.
The rollback reversed approximately $111.2 million in unauthorized borrowing and restored affected balances to their earlier positions. This prevented the attacker from retaining control of most of the assets acquired through the manipulated collateral.
However, the intervention could not retrieve assets that had already been moved outside the affected chain.
$9.19 Million Escaped Before Network Halt
Cronos said approximately $9.19 million was transferred away before validators stopped operations. That amount represents about 7.6% of the total funds affected by the incident.
The recovery process also came with consequences for unrelated network activity.
Because the blockchain was returned to an earlier state, legitimate transactions recorded during the compromised period were also removed. Cronos discarded 10,961 blocks, representing approximately one hour and 54 minutes of network activity.
As a result, users whose transactions were unrelated to the Tectonic exploit also saw activity reversed by the rollback.
Cronos acknowledged that the emergency decision involved a trade-off between preserving transaction finality and preventing the potential loss of a much larger portion of the affected funds.
Cronos Resumes Network Operations After Rollback
Block production resumed approximately 11 hours after the incident began. Following the rollback, affected balances were returned to their earlier states, while key network infrastructure was brought back online.
Cronos also restored its block explorer, indexers, subgraphs and public RPC endpoints.
The network's team is continuing to work with exchanges, bridges and other affected platforms to reconcile transactions that were removed as part of the rollback.
However, the post-mortem did not identify the attacker or explain how the remaining $9.19 million might be recovered.
The incident leaves Cronos with most of the affected funds restored but a smaller portion still unrecovered, while users and service providers work through the consequences of the network rollback.
Cronos' native cryptocurrency, CRO, was trading near $0.058 after the disclosure, up 0.62% over 24 hours.
