CoinEx to Shut Down After Nearly Nine Years as Crypto Slump and Compliance

CoinEx will shut down after nearly nine years, citing weak crypto markets, declining liquidity and rising regulatory and compliance costs.

Crypto exchange CoinEx will wind down its operations after nearly nine years, citing prolonged weakness in the cryptocurrency market, declining trading volumes and liquidity, and rising regulatory and compliance costs across major jurisdictions.

According to the statement cited by WuBlockchain, CoinEx will begin a phased shutdown of its services in September before ultimately closing withdrawals and the platform on Dec. 22. The exchange, which launched in December 2017, has operated as a global cryptocurrency trading platform for nearly nine years.

CoinEx Sets September Deadlines for Trading Services

CoinEx will stop accepting new registrations as part of the wind-down process. Futures trading will move to reduce-only mode on Sept. 15, meaning users will be able to reduce existing positions but will not be able to open new ones.

The exchange will then discontinue futures trading, staking, lending and other non-spot services on Sept. 22. Spot trading is scheduled to end on Sept. 29, marking the final stage of CoinEx's active trading operations.

The company plans to keep the markets platform and withdrawals available until Dec. 22, when the remaining services will be closed.

Crypto Market Conditions Increase Pressure on Exchanges

CoinEx's decision comes against a backdrop of challenging conditions for cryptocurrency trading platforms. Lower trading activity can directly reduce exchange revenue, while maintaining operations across multiple jurisdictions requires continued investment in compliance, regulatory processes and risk controls.

The combination of weaker market activity and higher operating requirements has created a difficult environment for exchanges that depend heavily on trading volumes. CoinEx's shutdown therefore represents another example of how prolonged market pressure can affect established crypto businesses, rather than only newer or smaller platforms.

The exchange's phased approach gives users a defined window to manage positions and withdraw assets before the final closure. The key deadline for customers will be Dec. 22, when CoinEx plans to close withdrawals and the platform entirely.
