Cboe Extends S&P 500 Index Options License Through 2051, Explores Tokenized

Cboe Global Markets has extended its exclusive licensing agreement with S&P Dow Jones Indices for another 25 years, securing its rights to offer trading in S&P 500 Index options through 2051.

Under the agreement, Cboe will retain exclusive rights to its flagship S&P 500 Index (SPX) options. The companies will also have the ability to explore new products beyond traditional index derivatives, including potential tokenized options contracts.

Wu Blockchain reported the development, noting that the agreement comes as trading activity in SPX options continues to reach record levels.

SPX Options Reach Record Trading Volume

SPX options recorded 970.6 million contracts in 2025, according to the information shared by Wu Blockchain. Average daily volume reached 3.9 million contracts, representing a 25% increase from the previous year.

The figures underscore the scale of Cboe's existing S&P 500 options business and provide the backdrop for the long-term extension of its licensing relationship with S&P Dow Jones Indices.

The SPX contract is tied to the S&P 500, one of the most widely followed U.S. equity indexes. Cboe operates the trading venue for the index options under its exclusive licensing arrangement with S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Tokenized Options Could Expand the Partnership

Beyond maintaining the existing SPX options business, the renewed agreement allows Cboe and S&P Dow Jones Indices to explore products outside conventional index derivatives.

Among the possibilities are tokenized options contracts, which would bring a blockchain-based structure into consideration for an established derivatives product.

However, the agreement does not represent the launch of a tokenized options product. No specific tokenized options contract or launch timeline has been announced.

That distinction leaves the potential development at the exploratory stage. The companies have not disclosed details about how such contracts could be structured, traded or settled if they move forward with a product.

Exclusive Rights Secured Through 2051

The 25-year extension gives Cboe continued exclusive rights to offer SPX options until 2051, providing a long-term framework for the exchange's flagship index-options franchise.

The agreement also leaves room for the two companies to develop additional products as financial-market infrastructure evolves. For now, the core business remains the established SPX options market, which handled 970.6 million contracts during 2025.

Any move toward tokenized options would require further development and an announced product before its practical implications for traders and markets can be assessed.
