Bitcoin Falls Below $80,000 as Whales Shift Positions Into ZEC, SOL and Other Altcoins
Bitcoin’s drop below $80,000 has coincided with a series of notable moves among large cryptocurrency traders, including major positions in Solana, ZEC, Ethereum and several smaller altcoins.
Bitcoin had recovered above $82,000 last week before stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data triggered renewed selling across digital assets. The data showed employment coming in higher than expected while the unemployment rate remained stable, increasing expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its September meeting.
U.S. bond yields subsequently moved higher, while Bitcoin fell below the $80,000 level. The shift in market conditions also spilled into altcoins, with heightened volatility prompting closer attention to transactions involving large crypto wallets.
Bitcoin weakness puts whale positions under scrutiny
Data from cryptocurrency analytics platform Lookonchain shows that several large traders have adjusted their exposure as the market has become more volatile.
Among the positions highlighted by Lookonchain is that of Chinese crypto trader Garrett Jin, who reportedly holds the largest on-chain short position in ZEC.
Jin recently closed a short position involving 7,000 ZEC, valued at $8.16 million, taking a loss of $4.12 million in the process.
Despite closing part of the trade, Jin still holds a short position of 32,760 ZEC, worth approximately $37.83 million. The remaining position has an outstanding loss of $18.95 million, with its reported liquidation price at $2,857.
The position illustrates the pressure facing leveraged traders as cryptocurrency prices move sharply in either direction.
Whale accumulates $28.82 million in Solana
While some large traders are reducing or managing short exposure, other whales appear to be accumulating selected altcoins.
Lookonchain reported that a whale identified as “HURDw” purchased a combined 285,503 SOL on Hyperliquid over the past three weeks. The position was valued at approximately $28.82 million based on the figures provided.
The accumulation places Solana among the assets attracting significant attention from large traders during the latest period of market volatility.
Other transactions tracked by Lookonchain involve smaller-cap tokens, including 4Stock and PONS.
One whale that had previously spent $4.73 million on PONS, UNI, AAVE and CASHCAT purchased another 3.48 million 4Stock tokens, paying 163,256 USDT for the position.
Cumberland-linked wallet accumulates PONS
A wallet associated with cryptocurrency trading firm Cumberland has also been accumulating PONS, according to the data cited by Lookonchain.
Over a four-day period, the wallet reportedly withdrew 3.5 million PONS from Gate at an average price of $0.80. The withdrawals were valued at approximately $2.78 million.
The activity adds to a series of large-wallet transactions involving altcoins as traders reassess their positions following Bitcoin’s move below $80,000.
Another trader, identified by the wallet address “0xbebb,” recorded a sharp increase in the value of a 4Stock position over a two-hour period.
According to the reported data, the trader spent 4,400 USDC to acquire 18.6 million 4Stock tokens. The position was subsequently valued at about $780,000, representing a reported 177-fold return.
The trader is now described as the largest investor in 4Stock based on the value of the holdings.
Abraxas Capital adds spot ETH against a large short
Ethereum is also part of the whale activity tracked during the market downturn.
Abraxas Capital purchased 13,000 spot ETH, valued at approximately $32.39 million, according to the data.
The purchase was made as a hedge against a much larger Ethereum short position held on Hyperliquid. The short position totals 141,180 ETH and is valued at approximately $353.27 million.
The transaction highlights how large traders can use spot cryptocurrency purchases alongside derivatives positions to manage exposure during periods of heightened market volatility.
Taken together, the transactions show that large crypto traders are not responding uniformly to Bitcoin’s decline. Some are closing or maintaining short positions, while others are accumulating assets such as Solana, PONS, 4Stock and Ethereum or using spot purchases to hedge derivatives exposure.
