Bitcoin ETFs Turn to Net Redemptions as Dip Buying Fades, Glassnode Says
The change follows a strong period for Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in August. U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $3.52 billion in net inflows during the month, their strongest monthly result of 2026, according to SoSoValue data cited by Cointelegraph.
ETF Flows Reverse After August Rally
The reversal began as August came to a close. On Aug. 29, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $201.8 million in net outflows, ending a nine-session streak of inflows. The nine-day run had brought more than $3 billion into the funds.
Glassnode's latest analysis shows the weakness continued into September. Its Sept. 16 report said U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows had turned negative, with approximately $334 million of outflows recorded between Sept. 8 and Sept. 14.
That followed nearly $1 billion of inflows during the first days of September, according to Glassnode. The analytics firm described the shift as part of a broader slowdown in new demand for Bitcoin.
Glassnode Sees Broader Demand Weakening
The ETF reversal is occurring alongside a slowdown in other measures of Bitcoin demand. Glassnode reported that on-chain capital inflows had stalled after 27 consecutive days of growth, while stablecoin supply remained flat and corporate treasury buying had also stopped.
The firm said Bitcoin’s realized capitalization, a measure of the value of coins based on their last moved price, recorded its first outflow in 28 days on Sept. 15. The unfinished Sept. 16 reading was also running negative at the time of the report.
The development marks a notable change from the conditions surrounding Bitcoin’s late-August rally. Glassnode previously reported that U.S. spot ETFs absorbed $2.23 billion during the squeeze window in August, while coins were simultaneously leaving exchanges and multiple wallet cohorts were accumulating.
Bitcoin Demand Enters a More Cautious Phase
Glassnode’s Sept. 14 market update showed Bitcoin trading near $76,800 after declining 4.4% over the week. The firm also reported weaker spot conditions, with cumulative volume delta moving further into negative territory, while futures open interest remained elevated.
The latest ETF figures therefore contrast sharply with August, when the funds attracted their largest monthly inflow of the year. The change does not by itself establish how long the redemptions will continue, but Glassnode’s data shows that the institutional buying impulse that accompanied the late-August recovery has weakened.
For now, the most recent Glassnode data places ETF flows among several measures pointing to stalled new demand, with the Sept. 8–14 period recording approximately $334 million in net outflows.
