AMD Gains Nearly 300% Over Past Year as Chipmaker Surpasses $1 Trillion Valuation
AMD has surged nearly 300% over the past year, significantly outpacing Nvidia, as the chipmaker recently crossed a $1 trillion market valuation, according to Coin Bureau.
Coin Bureau said AMD shares rose from about $158 to $631 over the 12-month period, while Nvidia gained 32%, moving from $170 to $225. Based on those figures, AMD’s 12-month return was roughly nine times Nvidia’s.
The comparison highlights the sharp difference in stock performance between the two major U.S. semiconductor companies over the period cited.
AMD Extends Gains as Technology Stocks Advance
AMD also rose more than 2% in Friday premarket trading as technology stocks moved higher. Nasdaq futures were up 0.55%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.33%.
The premarket move added to AMD’s already substantial 12-month advance. The company’s shares have experienced a sharp increase from the approximately $158 level cited by Coin Bureau to about $631.
Nvidia, meanwhile, posted a much smaller gain over the same period, rising from $170 to $225, according to the figures shared in the post.
The performance comparison is based on the share prices cited by Coin Bureau and does not account for other factors that can affect total shareholder returns.
AMD Joins $1 Trillion U.S. Chipmaker Group
AMD’s stock rally has also pushed the company into a new valuation category. The chipmaker recently crossed $1 trillion in market value, according to Coin Bureau.
That made AMD the fourth U.S. chipmaker to reach the $1 trillion milestone, following Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron.
The valuation milestone places AMD alongside three other major U.S. semiconductor companies that have reached the same threshold. Nvidia was the first among the group to establish a market value above $1 trillion, followed by Broadcom and Micron, according to the source post.
AMD’s move above the threshold comes alongside the company’s substantial share-price increase over the past year. At the same time, Nvidia remains significantly larger in market value despite its lower 12-month percentage gain cited in the comparison.
Semiconductor Stocks Remain in Focus
The latest figures underscore the divergent performance of major semiconductor stocks over the period covered by Coin Bureau. AMD’s nearly 300% increase contrasts with Nvidia’s 32% gain, producing the roughly nine-to-one difference in 12-month returns cited in the post.
Friday’s premarket gains also came as broader U.S. equity futures moved higher, with Nasdaq futures up 0.55% and S&P 500 futures up 0.33%.
AMD’s newly reported $1 trillion valuation provides another markets reference point for the company’s market performance as its shares continue to trade at levels substantially above those cited at the start of the 12-month comparison.
