21Shares, HashKey Cloud, UTXO Management and Sypher Capital Bond 250 BTC

Bitcoin Staking launches on Stacks as 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, UTXO Management and Sypher Capital bond 250 BTC in the Genesis Bond.

21Shares, HashKey Cloud, UTXO Management and Sypher Capital have collectively bonded 250 BTC in Stacks’ first institutional Bitcoin Staking round, marking the launch of the network’s Genesis Bond.

According to CoinMarketCap, the four institutions participated in the inaugural institutional bonding period. Stacks confirmed that the Genesis Bond went live on September 10, with approximately 250 BTC bonded at launch and the first weekly BTC rewards expected to be distributed on September 17.

Stacks Launches Institutional Bitcoin Staking

The Genesis Bond is deliberately limited in size, allowing participating institutions to operate Bitcoin Staking in a live environment before capacity expands in subsequent bonding periods. Future bonding periods are expected to open on a monthly cadence through 2026.

The participating institutions use different approaches. 21Shares, HashKey Cloud and UTXO Management bonded their BTC through self-custodial arrangements, keeping the Bitcoin under their control on Bitcoin L1. Sypher Capital participated through liquid staking via StackingDAO, which handles the bonding process on its behalf.

The structure allows participating BTC to remain on Bitcoin L1 while rewards are paid in BTC. Stacks said the bonded Bitcoin is locked through a standard Bitcoin script, with no third-party counterparty holding the funds.

Proof of Transfer Provides the BTC Rewards

The reward mechanism is connected to Stacks’ Proof of Transfer system. Stacks said PoX has been operating since January 2021 and has distributed more than 4,200 BTC to participants during that period. Under the Bitcoin Staking financial structure, Stacks miners bid BTC through PoX to mine blocks, with that BTC flow providing the rewards for eligible bond participants.

The launch follows several months of institutional preparation. UTXO Management became the inaugural institutional participant in May, while 21Shares and HashKey Cloud subsequently joined the Genesis Bond ahead of its launch.

For the broader Bitcoin ecosystem, the institutional round creates a live test of whether large BTC holders can generate Bitcoin-denominated yield while retaining custody on the base layer. The next concrete milestone is the first weekly reward markets distribution scheduled for September 17, followed by the expansion of capacity in subsequent bonding periods.
