Bitcoin Price Faces Bull Trap Risk as Recovery Remains Unconfirmed
Bitcoin Price Faces Bull Trap Risk as BTC Must Reclaim $68,500 and $75,800
Bitcoin remains at risk of a bull trap as several key market indicators have yet to confirm that the cryptocurrency has entered a sustainable trend reversal.
According to Glassnode, Bitcoin needs to recover and hold above two important price levels, $68,500 and $75,800, before the current rebound can be viewed as a more convincing recovery.
BTC has remained around the $60,000 to $65,000 region despite weakness in the U.S. dollar, a backdrop that would normally provide support for risk-sensitive assets. However, higher U.S. Treasury yields have limited that potential benefit and continued to create pressure on non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has approached 4.7%, increasing the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin compared with interest-bearing assets. Meanwhile, gold has traded near $4,400, while oil has recovered into the mid-$80 range.
The combination of these factors has left Bitcoin's recovery vulnerable to renewed selling if demand fails to strengthen.
Bitcoin Faces Two Critical Recovery Levels
Glassnode has identified $68,500 as one of the most important levels for Bitcoin's recovery.
The price represents the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis, which measures the average acquisition price of recent Bitcoin buyers. Reclaiming this level could improve the market structure by moving a significant portion of newer investors back into profitable territory.
A sustained move above $68,500 would therefore provide an early indication that buyers are regaining control.
Bitcoin still faces a more significant test at $75,800.

A recovery above $75,800 would provide considerably stronger evidence that Bitcoin has moved beyond the current capitulation framework.
Until that happens, traders could continue treating the rebound with caution.
Bitcoin Losses Remain Below Previous Capitulation Levels
Despite the weakness in Bitcoin's market structure, Glassnode's data suggests that current investor losses are not as severe as those recorded during previous major capitulation events.
Relative Unrealized Loss peaked near 25%. That remains significantly below the levels observed during previous severe market downturns, when the indicator moved above 60%.
The difference is important because extreme unrealized losses have historically accompanied periods when investors become increasingly willing to sell regardless of price.
The current market has not yet reached those conditions.
That could mean Bitcoin has avoided the type of widespread investor stress typically associated with major cycle bottoms. At the same time, it also means the market has not received one of the stronger signals that historically appeared around major reversals.
Seller Exhaustion Signal Remains Missing
Another indicator continues to raise questions about the strength of Bitcoin's recovery.
Glassnode's Realized Profit/Loss Ratio is currently around 0.75, remaining above the historical exhaustion threshold of 0.5.

During previous Bitcoin market cycles, the ratio generally moved below 0.5 before the cryptocurrency established more convincing market bottoms. Such readings indicate that realized losses have become sufficiently dominant relative to realized profits to suggest that sellers may be running out of conviction.
That condition has not emerged during the current recovery.
As a result, Bitcoin's recent rebound may still represent a relief rally rather than the beginning of a confirmed long-term reversal.
Investors will likely continue watching the indicator for evidence that selling pressure is finally approaching exhaustion.
Derivatives Market Turns More Constructive
Not every indicator remains bearish.
Bitcoin derivatives traders have become more constructive, with the 30-day Perpetual Market Directional Premium returning to positive territory.
The development suggests that sentiment among perpetual futures traders has improved as Bitcoin attempted to recover from its recent weakness.
However, the improvement in derivatives positioning has not been matched by stronger U.S. spot demand.
The Coinbase Premium remains negative, indicating that demand from U.S. spot market participants is still relatively weak. This creates an important divergence between derivatives positioning and the underlying spot market.
For Bitcoin to establish a stronger recovery, derivatives optimism may need to be accompanied by sustained spot buying.
Without that confirmation, the current rally could remain vulnerable to another reversal.
Bitcoin ETF Flows Offer Mixed Signals
Institutional activity has also shown signs of improvement, although the overall picture remains uncertain.
Selling pressure from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs has eased, with ETF flows repeatedly returning to positive territory. Early August also produced a notable accumulation burst, suggesting that institutional investors have shown renewed interest in Bitcoin at certain points.
However, persistent institutional demand has yet to emerge.
That distinction matters because sustained ETF inflows can provide a more reliable source of spot demand during a Bitcoin recovery. Intermittent inflows, by comparison, may not be enough to support a prolonged price advance.
Investors are therefore likely to watch upcoming ETF flow data closely for evidence that institutional accumulation is becoming more consistent.
Bitcoin Options Market Shows Two-Way Positioning
Activity in the Bitcoin options market also points to uncertainty rather than overwhelming bullish conviction.
Implied volatility has compressed toward the mid-30s, placing it near the lower portion of its two-year range. Lower volatility indicates that options traders are pricing in a relatively contained near-term trading environment compared with periods of extreme market stress.
At the same time, options positioning around $65,000 shows exposure on both sides of the market.
Call activity is visible around $68,000 and $130,000, while downside hedging remains concentrated near $45,000.
The positioning suggests that traders are preparing for multiple possible outcomes rather than positioning overwhelmingly for a single direction.
That uncertainty reinforces the importance of Bitcoin reclaiming the key levels identified by Glassnode.
What Bitcoin Needs for a Confirmed Reversal
Bitcoin's next major move could depend on whether the cryptocurrency can combine improving derivatives sentiment with stronger spot demand.
A move above $68,500 would represent the first major technical and on-chain hurdle. Reclaiming the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis would strengthen the recovery structure and potentially improve investor confidence.
The more important confirmation would come above $75,800.
A sustained recovery through the True Market Mean would provide stronger evidence that Bitcoin has successfully moved beyond the market conditions associated with the recent capitulation phase.
Until both levels are reclaimed, investors may continue to treat the current recovery as unconfirmed.
The market also needs stronger evidence of seller exhaustion, improving U.S. spot demand and more consistent institutional buying.
Conclusion
Bitcoin remains vulnerable to a bull trap because several key indicators have yet to confirm a durable market reversal.
Glassnode identifies $68,500 and $75,800 as critical recovery levels, with the first representing the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis and the second marking the True Market Mean. BTC has remained below both levels since early February 2026.
Meanwhile, Relative Unrealized Loss has peaked near 25%, well below the more than 60% levels recorded during previous severe downturns. The Realized Profit/Loss Ratio also remains around 0.75, above the historical seller-exhaustion threshold below 0.5.
Derivatives sentiment has improved, but the negative Coinbase Premium indicates that U.S. spot demand remains weak. Bitcoin ETF flows have also improved intermittently, while options positioning continues to show uncertainty.
For now, Bitcoin's recovery remains a work in progress. Reclaiming $68,500 would provide the first meaningful confirmation, while a move above $75,800 could offer much stronger evidence that the cryptocurrency has entered a sustainable market reversal.
