Bitcoin $1 Million by 2030? Analyst Says It’s Mathematically Impossible
Bitcoin at $1 Million by 2030? Analyst Says the Numbers Do Not Add Up
The widely repeated prediction that Bitcoin could reach $1 million by 2030 is facing renewed scrutiny, with Markus Thielen, head of research at 10x Research, arguing that the capital required to push the cryptocurrency to that level makes the forecast mathematically unrealistic.
Speaking on Cointelegraph’s Trade Secrets, Thielen said Bitcoin would need an extraordinary amount of new capital to move from its current valuation to a $1 million price per coin. In his view, historical capital flows into the cryptocurrency market do not support the idea that such a dramatic increase can happen within the next four years.
“It’s mathematically impossible,” Thielen said when discussing the $1 million Bitcoin prediction.
At the time of publication, Bitcoin had a market capitalization of approximately $1.28 trillion, while the cryptocurrency was trading at around $63,868, according to CoinMarketCap data.
Thielen estimates that Bitcoin would need approximately $15 trillion in additional capital to reach a price of $1 million per Bitcoin. Such an inflow would represent a scale far beyond the capital Bitcoin has historically attracted.
Why a $1 Million Bitcoin Would Require Trillions
The argument behind Thielen’s assessment is based largely on the relationship between Bitcoin's market capitalization and capital entering the asset.
According to Thielen, Bitcoin has seen roughly $1 trillion of inflow over the past 15 years, helping its market capitalization reach approximately $1 trillion at an earlier stage of its development.
Moving from the current market level to a $1 million Bitcoin would require a dramatically larger amount of capital.
Thielen estimates that another $15 trillion would need to flow into Bitcoin. To put that figure into perspective, he compares it with the size of the US stock market.
The required capital would be equivalent to roughly 25% of the total value of the US stock market flowing into Bitcoin over the next four years.
That does not necessarily mean every dollar invested in Bitcoin directly increases its market capitalization by the same amount. However, Thielen's argument highlights the enormous scale of capital that would need to enter the market for Bitcoin to sustain a valuation consistent with a $1 million price.
“It takes trillions and trillions of dollars to move the price really materially higher,” Thielen said.
Bitcoin’s Rising Price Could Create a New Problem
Thielen also believes Bitcoin's increasing price could make it psychologically less attractive to some retail investors.
As the cost of purchasing one entire Bitcoin rises, investors may become less comfortable with the idea of owning a complete unit of the asset.
The issue is not that investors cannot purchase fractions of Bitcoin. Bitcoin can be divided into extremely small units known as satoshis. But Thielen argues that some retail investors continue to think psychologically in terms of owning one whole asset.
“I think a lot of people kind of wondered, maybe I should just rather buy a new car than buy one Bitcoin, or should I really work a whole year for just one Bitcoin?” he said.
Thielen compared the phenomenon with other expensive assets, suggesting that consumers often prefer owning a complete unit rather than a fraction.
The argument could become increasingly relevant if Bitcoin moves substantially higher. At $1 million per Bitcoin, buying an entire coin would be financially out of reach for most retail investors, potentially changing the way newcomers perceive the asset.
Thielen Warns Against Expecting Another Immediate Rally
The analyst also cautioned Bitcoin investors against assuming that the cryptocurrency will quickly repeat the dramatic rallies seen during previous market cycles.
Bitcoin's market capitalization is now significantly larger than it was during earlier stages of its history. As a result, Thielen believes increasingly large amounts of capital would be required to generate comparable percentage gains.
He specifically pointed to Bitcoin's $126,000 all-time high, warning that the cryptocurrency may not return to that level as quickly as some investors expect.
“Usually, it takes some time because we are at a higher market cap,” Thielen said.
He added that returning to $100,000 would already represent a significant achievement under his current outlook.
The comments contrast with the more aggressive forecasts that have become common throughout the cryptocurrency industry.
Why $1 Million Bitcoin Predictions Keep Getting Attention
The idea of Bitcoin reaching $1 million by 2030 is not new.
Several high-profile figures in the cryptocurrency and investment industries have previously suggested that Bitcoin could eventually reach the seven-figure price level.
Among those who have made versions of the prediction are Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood.

Such forecasts frequently attract headlines because they provide investors with a simple and memorable target.
Thielen, however, believes the use of large round numbers can encourage unrealistic expectations among retail investors.
“Round numbers and the higher the number, the more it’s being quoted by the press,” he said.
According to Thielen, aggressive price targets can create the impression that investors have an unusually easy opportunity to generate substantial returns.
Analyst Says Extreme Predictions Could Hurt Retail Investors
Thielen is particularly concerned about how ambitious Bitcoin price forecasts affect smaller investors.
When investors hear that Bitcoin could reach $1 million, they may begin to view the prediction as a baseline rather than a highly optimistic scenario. Even if they believe there is only a partial chance of the forecast becoming reality, they could still decide to take larger risks.
“These optimistic price targets tend to hurt retail investors,” Thielen said, arguing that some investors may conclude that even a partially successful prediction would produce enormous returns.
The issue becomes more significant during periods when market sentiment is strongly bullish.
Thielen said that many investors remained highly optimistic and expected Bitcoin to move toward higher prices. He argued that his firm's more conservative approach had proved more appropriate.
When Could Bitcoin Reach $1 Million?
There is no consensus on when, or whether, Bitcoin will reach $1 million.
Some long-term investors believe continued institutional adoption, greater access through financial products and increasing demand could eventually push Bitcoin toward seven figures.
Others argue that the capital requirements, market structure and volatility make such forecasts highly uncertain.
When asked which year Bitcoin could reasonably reach $1 million, Thielen declined to provide a specific timeline.
“I don’t want to say never,” he said, while emphasizing that $1 million is a very high number.
That distinction is important. Thielen is not claiming that Bitcoin can never reach the seven-figure threshold. Instead, his argument is that expecting Bitcoin to reach $1 million by 2030 requires assumptions about capital inflows that he considers unrealistic.
Bitcoin’s Road to $1 Million Remains Uncertain
Bitcoin's future price remains one of the most closely watched questions in the cryptocurrency market.
At approximately $63,868 and with a market capitalization of around $1.28 trillion, Bitcoin would need to experience an enormous expansion to reach $1 million per coin.

Thielen's analysis places the focus on the amount of capital required rather than simply projecting a percentage gain based on previous market cycles.
For investors, the debate highlights an important distinction between a long-term possibility and a near-term price target. Bitcoin reaching $1 million someday is fundamentally different from expecting it to reach that level within the next four years.
As the market matures and Bitcoin's valuation grows, each additional stage of price appreciation may require increasingly substantial capital and stronger demand.
For now, the $1 million Bitcoin forecast remains one of the cryptocurrency industry's most ambitious predictions. Whether it becomes reality by 2030 will depend on factors ranging from institutional demand and global liquidity to investor sentiment and the broader evolution of digital assets.
